5 Series E39 for 4k possible?

You are right in that cost of running a higher end car such as a 5-series should not be underestimated when compared with the likes of those that you have mentioned. Wasnt meaning to shoot you down, but the sheer difference in these two categories needs to be emphasised. :)

Wasn't thinking you would mate, a lot of people will read my posts thinking "well in the case why is his choice in cars so different" but its all down to personal taste :) Lots of he said/she said on here!!

Was just pointing out that its ok being able to buy a car, but affording to run it is another thing people don't take into account!

get a golf 1.8t amazing ride quality and comfort compared to a focus, e39 costs mega to run and fix and it will break. i'd never get a car with no s/h it's obvious it's not been looked after

A Golf 1.8T for £4k will not be worth having.

It depends what Tom wants at the end of the day. This post is about a 5 series BMW not hot hatches.

I doubt he'd be interested in the likes of the Golf 1.8T, 306 Gti, Xsara VTS.

Shame, all great cars.

Depends where you look. A guy on here not so long back showed us his 1.8T GTi that he got for £2500. Ok it was through a friend, but still, it can be done.

Yes with moon mileage.

It seems that he either wants a 5 series or a 2.0 Focus??

Not everyone is into hot hatches like me and you;):D

Who insures an 18yr old on a 520i for 1400? I pay more than that for a 1.25 Fiesta at 19, do you live in a field or something?

Either insurance has risen massively in the last couple of years, or you live in a high risk post code. I paid less than youve said when i was 18 to insure an MR2 GTS Turbo. 520i insurance is not bad at all.

Absolutely more than available for £4000 now even through places such as autotrader.

This sort of money wont get you a facelift Sport as Fox, Peter, and Olly (amongst others) have and post on here, but it will get you a nice sensible mileage example of a prefacelift SE with plenty of options. You can update the asthetics later too with new lights and even the sport bodykit, as the body is the same.

Get a 6 cylinder pre facelift SE, with leather and as many options as you can find. Cars to go for are the 523i and the 528i depending on how your insurance fares.

The older 520i is only a 4cylinder engine and although reliable, its not hugely powerful and is eclipsed by the much better 6cylinder models. Running costs between 523 and 528 will be largely the same.

Remember that any cars you will be looking at will be getting on for 9-10 years old, and thus they WILL break and they WILL cost you reasonable money to keep running. Prices that the other guys seem to quote for repairs seem quite reasonable however, there are loads of specialist BMW places which will carry out repairs relatively cheaply. Just dont expect Ford Focus running costs, these are a much heavier more substantial car, suspension components will need doing, tyre wear will be heavier, fuel consumption will be higher.

Interesting, thanks for that Jez.

Insurance is massively high.

Jez what about something like this looks quite nice.

It doesnt look like the type of car i would want to buy personally. I prefer cars off older people who are likely to have thrown money at a main dealer every time its needed so much a washer top up. That car has clearly been modified and as such i wouldnt want it. The mentality of a person who changes the wheels and adds leather to a car is not one of which i would want to be the previous owner - they wont have blindly followed the book and gone for the best of everything.

Try and find a completely standard one with an owner who has had it for many years and with a full main dealer history attached.

This is rather nice, bloody loads available as you said you really do have the pick of the crop.

Look at that SH. Cloth seats though.

No leather, the service history isnt BMW, and its from a dealer. It also doesnt have standard wheels :)

You can afford to be picky, be picky, buy off a private seller whose had the car years so that you can judge how it will have been treated.

You want a car with absolutely comprehensive BMW service history, leather, 1 or 2 owners (current one for a long time) and from a large house from a seller who clearly has more money than sense and has thrown money at a main dealer every time its needed absolutely any lifting of the bonnet.
