£50 notes

Lie? Could be that they had insufficient change to handle £50 notes that day?

I know I wouldn't serve someone trying to buy something under £1 with a £20 or £50 anyway. Funnily enough, shops aren't banks.

It's a routine sign. It might be because of small purchases - it's a card shop - but the fact remains that it's a choice.

The main reason to refuse them is concern about the loss if the note is fake combined with the fact that staff tend to be unfamiliar with them and thus more likely to accept a fake.
 
Manx notes for the win, its a pain if you forget to change your manx money to english before going across to the UK though, as no where will accept it at all. Newsagents in the UK have even picked up me trying to use a manx one pound coin.... :(
