500 Gig Sata2 drive whats best

terryuk22:

Have a look at the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB ST3500630AS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM the quickest 7200 rpm HDD around (at the present moment), also quite quiet.

The Samsung SpinPoint T HD501LJ 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM will probably be the quietest running, but not as fast as the Seagate 7200.10 500GB HDD.

You could also consider the Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB 5000KS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM

I personally would avoid Maxtor HDDs, which seem to have a bit of a reliability issue at present.

I would think others will have different opinions. :)

If you want silence go for the Samsung but this is probably slightly worse performance wise. Seagate has the reliability record. WD 5000YS is the best performance drive out of the WDs and also the most reliable but if you want something slightly cheaper then the 5000KS is also a good performer.

I've got an article here from a magazine but cannot upload it.

Guys, i found these 2 websites will be useful for comparison.

From my own personal opinion, Seagate 7200.10, Hitachi, Western Digital and Samsung are good drives. I'll avoid Maxtor which usually equates to Max-Torture by some of the people.

Also, threadstarter, may i know what use do you have for the 500gb hdd? If its for a file server, i think Seagate has a ES version and Hitachi has E7K500 with higher MTBF.

PS: May i know what does OP stands for?
