500 pound to upgrade my system.

I have a [email protected], and it runs everything I throw at it. I personally think it will be a waste of money, cos your prob not gonna notice much diff. Buy something that your going to be like "wow", like a bigger screen, faster hdds or a new cool gadget. I love gedgets:D. Or buy nothing at all, just cos you got money to spend, dont mean you have to spend it:p

I have 500 to upgrade my motherboard, memory, cpu and cooler. Have looked at the overclocked bundles but don't know what to get. I always want to max games out, and now there are some games that are more cpu reliant like grand theft auto 4 and crysis. What is the best i can get for my money peeps, would like some type of quadcore but not certain. Have the money here waiting to order hehe

My current specs.

Vista 64 / windows 7 64
Nvidia 295 gtx ( Not changing now )
700 Watt coolermaster Real Power M700 psu ( Not changing )
Asus P5Q
Wolfdale 8400 dual core with cooler. overclocked @ 3.9
8 gig ddr2 corsair dominator @ 1066mhz

What can i get for my money that will improve my systems performance best for gaming. Thanks guys.
Save your money mate just get a Q9550 with 12MB L2 Cache (12Mb L2 cache is important as it allows more to be stored on the chips cache which is must faster than system ram) you should be able to keep everything else in your system and can sell the old CPU to recoup some of the cost. There will be no games out on the PC in the next few years which a GTX295 + Q9550 or higher cannot handle. If you do a lot of media encoding a Core i7 will be much quicker but tbh few games will show massive FPS boosts over a Q9550 as PC games are just not being coded to take much advantage of the extra cores. That's not likely to change for a long time to come ;) I presume your gaming @ 1920x1200 or lower if higher then a Core i7 will help but 1920x1200 or lower it will make little difference in most games.

i game at 1920 x 1080 mate. I just wanted that extra power with the cpu's. I have decided to go for this bundle http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-011-OB . but the picture is completely wrong haha. look at the list of what you get and then look at the picture!!! and yeah i know i went over my 500 budget, but that doesnt really bother me, im sure it will be worth it, the i7's ive heard are quality :)

you've probably made your mind up, but what games are you playing that your rig can't handle, if you wait a year or so to upgrade you will probably pay a lot less to upgrade to the same rig.

save your money mate, but its your hard earned, upto you

Its not that my system cant handle any games, its just 2 games and sure to be more. gt4 cant have everything up max and run smoothly enough. and crysis cant play on extreme but the notch down is fine. i have 16x aa on everygame that can take it other than that and its great. Obviously the 295 helps a lot too. But for me it is time togo to the i7. But i do appreciate all the advice guys. Thanks a lot.

I may be wrong here, but I doubt any pc will play all games totally maxed out,, anyway thats more todo with the gpu then cpu isnt it??

Just bung a Q9550 in it and sell your old CPU, you'll save about £400 and have a decent rig, you've got plenty of fast RAM and a good mobo.

But is it worth spending £170 on a new cpu, when the 775 are dead in the water and will he see that much performance in games?,, cos I still dont think games need quad, but I could be wrong there?. A faster graphics card would give you more of a boost I think

But saying all that, a few days ago I was thinking about upgrading my dual cpu to quad, even tho I dont need anymore speed from my cpu yet,,,,,,,, ummmm that was until I saw the prices. So I think I will get a quad cpu this time next yr when their dirt cheap and then I will see more of a performance boost in games. I cant bin a pc untill its no use to me, I like to get all my money's worth:D

im in a similar boat
e8500 @ 4.0, gtx295 plays everything i thow at it and more, i just cant justify the spendage
i7 would be nice but its not going to make that much of a difference to what ive got at the mo.
get some ssd, or a nice 28" monitor

Im happy with my choices mate, thanks anyway for the advice. The 295 doesnt have enough legroom in my system at mo, adding the i7 setup with help a lot with that, it's already ordered :)
