I'm currently running a 3.2 P4 with 1gig of ram and a 6800gt (I think it’s a 6800 - it died at some point and the replacement was a slightly newer/upgraded model). Its starting to become a little slow in a lot of games and I think the HD is on the way out. Now that my rig is getting pretty 'old' I figured I could actual get a noticeable upgrade for a fairly cheap price.

I was thinking about spending less than £500 to upgrade the Processor, MB, Graphics card and get a new 500gb Hard drive – would keep PSU, case, monitor, sound card. Machine would be primarily for gaming.

I'm looking for a recommendation on components at that price point, and whether or not the £500 would give me a noticeable upgrade from my current machine.

Cheers.

*edit* I put together a spec myself, but i've not kept up with hardware changes for ... well ... years, so i'm a little clueless :p

Abit AB9 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £64.99
Samsung SpinPoint T HD501LJ 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM £55.99
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit £57.99
BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC 320MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - £164.99
Intel Core 2 DUO E4400 "LGA775 Allendale" 2.00GHz (800FSB) - Retail £79.99

Total inc vat £498.14

I would spec but OCUK main site is down for me.

Something like the following should be within your budget.

RAM - Crucial Ballistix 6400 2BG
Mainboard - Gigabyte GA P35C-DS3R
HDD - 500 Gb Seagate
GFX - 8800GTS 640

What PSU have you got?

EDIT it's probably over TBH.

Only change I'd make would be changing the BFG 8800 for an OcUK one and getting a better motherboard, P35 chipset.
