Up until now I've stuck with Hitachi drives whenever possible (my first extra hard disk drive was an IBM, as I understand it Hitachi took over IBM's operations so I stuck with them when IBM drives appeared to be phased out). These appear to be out of stock at the moment for the 500GB drive.
Is it a case of being able to pick any disk drive or are some manufacturers less reliable than others (should I consider using an alternative or just wait until Hitachi drives are restocked)? The drive will just be used for backups of data from the main drive and general data storage (video and audio media).
Also the Vista performance section flags my current hard disk (a 500GB Sata Hitachi drive) as performing slightly worse than most of the other components tested. Is there any particular reason why this is (and is it worth attempting to improve this when purchasing a new drive?)?
