I've just fitted a Seagate ST3500841AS 7200.9 500GB SATA II 300 drive to my system and it wasn't recognised. My mobo is quite an old one but it's happily running a SATA Raptor on the other SATA port so the new drive should work shouldn't it? I tried the drive on another system (with a much newer mobo) and it still isn't recognised.

Is there something obvious I'm missing? Is there anything I should know about the latest high capacity SATA II 300 drives like problems with backward compatibility or is my drive simply DOA?

[edit] I've yet to try the jumper fix yet though, will try now...

Is it seen in the BIOS? Have you checked that sata port is enabled and set to auto?
Can you see it within disc management?
Doh! I've just read the FAQ and seen the stuff about SATA II 300 and older controllers :o

I'll try the jumper trick first and report back :)

Tried setting the jumper, it's exactly the same, it's not recognised in the BIOS at all and computer management can't see it from Windows either.

The mobo is an Asrock P4V88+...

Well, I took it back to be tested and it worked just fine for the supplier. Apparently, it simply won't work with an Asrock P4V88+ even with the compatibility jumper set

I exchanged it for a PATA interface equivalent, actually a 7200.10 rather than the SATA II 7200.9 so I'm going to put that in my Maxtor external drive housing instead.
