500mb data allowance, is it enough?

I feel out of my depth with mobiles, up until now I've only ever considered pay as you go phones and my current phone is a £15 samsung somethingorother.

I've been paying over £20 a month on top ups recently so decided a pay monthly phone is the way to go.

The HTC desire thread caught my eye. I've had a chance to see the phone close up and I really like it.

The monthly data allowance on the Orange Dolphin 25 plan is something I'm curious about, 500mb doesn't seem that much these days but I suppose it won't be used for downloading anything big. Should I be worried about the costs if I do manage to exceed the usage allowance?

Depends on your useage - I barely use 200MB a month just checking email, facebook, OcUK, the very odd download etc. but if you start using spotify, youtube even iplayer on it then your quickly going to use 1-2gig a month or more.

Nearly everyday I check

Sun Online, OCuK, Engadget, Kotaku etc and I use about 100mb a month, even less if I disable pictures.

it's as big of an issue as I thought it'd be.

when I get my new smart phone I guess I ll need a bolt on for the first month or so just in case ( getting apps and phone updates) I find it easier to do it stright to the device, but you cna use wifi

Mines used daily for facebook and other web browsing, sometimes msn and emails are checked hourly and I use about 200mb a month.

I d/led about 400mb of data last month through tethering and still didn't hit the monthly limit. Just using it for some browsing but mainly reading rss and probably only hits 50mb month.

You can keep track of data usage on o2 here with My o2 Beta

Eleven days into the month and i have not even hit 50MB yet, I spend a lot of time commuting and using the internet.

Unless you are streaming most days, I say 500MB is plenty !

Too late but, if you had gone with T-Mobile their monthly allowance is 1GB. And you could have stayed on PAYG too because they have a 6 month "unlimited" internet booster on their PAYG for £20. You have obviously would have to buy the phone outright.

I've used 900meg in the last month. I use you tube, forums and have downloaded maybe four albums on spotify. 100 meg may be enough for a lot of users now but can you be sure that it's not going to increase within a year or so. When I had my n 95 I used very little data but now I have a desire I'm hammering data. I think if you sign up for anything less than a gig you may regret it.

If you only browse on the net then 500mb is more than enough. I doubt anyone can top over 500mb for just emails and browsing with a few videos here and there...perhaps if you are on it like 10hours a day, then maybe :D. Of course if you are downloading and streaming then it might not be enough.

I use 600mb+ per month, a lot of that I reckon is my Google Reader RSS feeds through NewsRob, plus I download the odd podcast via Listen.
I'm with Vodafone and despite their new FUP policy I'm in my 2nd month over 500mb and they've still not sent me a warning text yet.

The first month you'll download a lot because you're trying lots of new apps and checking youtube vids out. After that it settles down.

I've noticed that since getting FroYo on my Nexus One my usage has gone up from an average 4-600mb a month to 2gb! (I don't tether or download mp3s etc). It's just that now I watch news clips rather than just reading them on the Guardian and BBC sites. Having flash has changed how I use the device. Having said that 80% of my usage is over wifi so I'm not too fussed.

I use a newsreader, facebook, internet, email etc and use about 100mb per month. Some programs allow updating only when in wifi range and as i spend most of my time (1/3 asleep) at home it really helps a lot.

Last month I used 575.560MB of mobile browsing and data calls. Most of that is probably Google Maps (use my phone as a satnav regularly) which is a bit of a data hog.
