My parents build has a cheap and nasty case/psu combo, it is a Cit 500w psu

Cit 500W
- one 12V rail, 22A = 264W
- 80mm noisy fan
- one (!) sata connector

and i just replaced it with my old psu that i had lying around

FSP ATX 350PNR

- two 12v rails = 276W
- one nice 120mm silent fan
- lots of sata connectors

to me this us an "upgrade" because:
- there are more watts on the 12V rail
- it is a better and quieter fan
- it has more sata connectors
- FSP do better on budget psu's in general than Cit to my knowledge

have i been a complete idiot or am i thinking the right thing?

yep, sounds good to me, its not a great PSU but its better than the CiT. i would be interested to know roughly how soon a corsair 430W would pay for itself because of its better energy efficiency though

corsair 430W

the psu is only temporary because:

new 7000-series graphics card into uni rig -> 5850 with other 5850 in home rig for CF -> upgrade home rig psu with better CF support -> old home rig psu into parents machine

very complicated the chain of upgrades :p

ah fair enough, i was just wondering if you could persuade them to get a good quality PSU, but if your going to give them one eventually then theres not much point

also, this build only consists of 4 components:

- i3 2100
- msi matx mobo
- 4gb ocz ram
- 1tb hdd

it isnt really the most demanding juice-wise :p :p :p
