50c idle temps

I have recently move computer rooms - now in a much smaller box room, with my PC in a pretty tight spot next to another PC under the desk fairly enclosed in.

From previous posts and question I asked I am gonna mount a 200mm fan in my desk top to draw out hot air which collects behind the PC's and also upgrade my stock fans to some that will shift almost twice the air through the case.

I was just wondering if I need to renew the thermal paste while I'm at it. Idle temps according to core temp are 50c - going to about 55c when just doing a bit of internet surfing. Under load it hits 85c. Everything was 10c lower when the PC had space.

Will the new fans cure this or do you think the problem runs beyond airflow?

I think you problem might be solved only slightly with new fans to be honest with you if you
PC is in a box run next to another PC that is then under a desk then there is no room for
any sort of airflow going round the PC's its just sat in a cloud of hot air.

Personally I would re-do the thermal paste while you are there is cant hurt!!!
(Unless you do it wrong)

Hope this helps.

Can you not move the PC onto the desk, that way the heat would easily be able to escape, and it should run much cooler than stuck under the desk next to another PC.

Get a small portable room fan sit it on the floor towards the PC's this will help move the still hot air around the PC's should help reduce temps.

Even leaving the door open slightly + a window should help as well.

Have you given the inside of the case a good clean? In particular if you have dust filters. Make sure when you have your new fans you have sufficient inlet and exhaust.

DJ Bucho - I could but this would be a last resort. I haven't got a lot of desk space and the big case would be right in the way.

OLDPHART - certainly higher room temps will have an effect. In these warm days the window and door open are a good option.

mightymouse - yes - the case and filters have had a damn good blow out with a compressor.

UPDATE: New fans installed to the case - while the prime 95 temps are down considerably from 85c to 75c, the idle temps are still around the 50c mark. This does not change even if I set the fans to full speed and today with my fiddling around the PC is out from under the desk. Very strange as the full load of prime 95 seems very reasonable which suggests the thermal paste must be doing a pretty good job.

I have a 200mm fan I intend to mount into the desk top to suck warm air out, but today has made me wonder if this will be of any use as the case has plenty of room being out from under the desk. What implications are there having an idle temp of 50c? When the PC is under load with my video editing it is at a decent temp (75c max)

75c sounds 'alright' to me, not ideal obviously, but within limits (for an intel chip anyway, others feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). Do you have a picture of where your case is installed, as sometimes it's far easier to make suggestions based on a picture rather than a description ;-)

I can certainly add a pic if where the case is installed, but last night made me wonder if it has much to do with case position. When I added my new case fans it was totally out from under the desk, plenty if space front and back. The idle temps were still at 50c. If fact just as before a max of 55c is recorded by Coretemp on occasion.

This made me wonder if ventilation is the culprit or something else. I can't remember idle temps being that high. Under load temps are in keeping with what they used to be now.

I have the same CPU and the same problem.. my case sits on top of the desk and has plenty of air moving around it.

I'm replacing all my case fans with better ones but will probably need to get a decent CPU cooler.

Famouscfc07 - just be mindful that what you intend might not make much difference. I have a great CPU air cooler, the Phanteks one in my signature. I have just installed some cracking case fans, have removed a HDD bay from infront of the intake fans, have dusted the inside of my case to oblivion but the idle temps remain unchanged. Yesterday after install my case was free as a bird not under the desk with space around it like yours. The temp stays the same whether the fans are at low speed or at full rocket take off speed. This fan replacement work has however reduced my full load speed by a decent amount. Saying that, my PC is only at full load for a few hours a week when I video render. Makes me wonder if the £50 was worth it.

What annoys me is that I can't remember what it used to be like before I moved computer rooms. For all I know it was always like that and I could be moving the world to try and cool a chip down that just runs hot.

I wonder what implications there are at running the CPU between 50-55c idle all the time? It's well in the safe zone but I was under the impression that any surpluses heat degrades the chip and shortens its life.

Right, I've googled myself into oblivion regarding this and have come to the conclusion that my idle temp is not too important. The fact I'm sub 80c on prime 95 and my real world video rendering is what matters. I'm gonna leave the thermal paste well alone as I'll likely just bugger it up!
