I'm going to ditch my wireless home network and want to revert to a wired one for the second PC (will keep wireless for lappys). needing a 50m+ cable to route up into the attic and then into the other PC room. Anything I should know about these cables before buying? On Virgin 50Mb broadband, but assume that just any standard RJ145 cable will work at full speed?

Yeah they don't work right after 100M, so 50M should be OK. You could look into "Ethernet over power".

+1 Also called "powerline" or "homeplug"

Here are some options. It's not quite as quick as full gigabit ethernet but it is still pretty fast (more than fast enough to get full speed from 50Meg virgin broadband) and much less hassle than routing ethernet cable all round the house.

any cat5e cable will be fine. you'll need a few RJ45 plugs to terminate (you'll need some cheap RJ45 crimpers)or if you want to be professional then graba few ethernet sockets - you may need a krohn punch down tool though for that.

if you don't know how to wire up check this guide and use method B

edit: indeed some home plugs might work well - but upstairs and downstairs should be on the same electrical ring.

The item linked is a single adapter - you'd need 2 of them.

Only downside of homeplugs is that they don't work particularly well if they're not on the same ring main so it's worth a quick check before jumping in. They will work across ring mains but the speed will be compromised.

Okay doke, I'll have a proper look into things first then as it is such an old house that the wiring is a bit interesting:rolleyes: Been reading that they also seem to be quite susceptible to breaking, so may end up just going back to the ethernet cable option. Found a 50m one for less than 20 quid, that is already fitted with end plugs, so should be easy enough to route it through to the other room.

Just picked up a cat5 50m one for 15 squid with next day delivery. Now I just have to build a suit of armour to keep all the spiders off me whilst I crawl around either under the floors or in the attic!:D

But bear in mind, most of that cable on ebay at cheap prices are stranded, not solid cores so if you are terminating at faceplaces etc, then it can be tricky.
