I have had 50mb now for a few months, when it was first installed everything was fine and speeds were easily reaching4mb or 5mb/sec. Now though I am struggling to stream a youtube video with it stopping and buffering.

Setup
--------

Virgin 50mb Modem
D-Link DIR-655 Router
Macbook Pro 15"

The router is running firmware 1.31EU with DHCP enabled, see all my router settings below:

When I do a speed test I get the following:

The connection is shocking, general browsing of web pages I am left waiting for things to happen. Downloading files I am lucky if I hit over 1mb/sec, just shocking considering this should be 50mb. I haven't touched any settings on my router since the day 50mb was installed and there is no difference between using WiFi (which I use most of the time) and plugged directly into the router via RJ45.

Can anyone please help suggest what could be wrong here?

Thanks!

Only thing you can do is complain in this forum http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Up-to-50Mb-broadband/bd-p/50mb and post trace routes etc etc you need to check your modems power levels and ping to bbc.co.uk and a traceroute
modem is http://192.168.100.1/

If you create a thread there the VM techs will look at your connection normally within 3 days and tell you what if any problem you have.
The vast majority simply get told that there is an over utilization problem on the UBR though which basically means too many people and not enough bandwidth to go round.

My guess is there's too many users on your vm hub but could be that your power levels aren't good on the modem.

Thanks for the advice mate, what screen shots should I be posting of the modem settings "Cable Modem Downstream"?

I'll post up all the details on there and see how I get on. Just for here this is my trace route results:

I'm seriously considering going back to 20mb or leaving VM, they are complete rip off merchants!

Setting my newsgroup port to 443 seems to gets things running at 5mb/sec. Looks like from some reading that ports 119, 563 and 8080 are all throttled by VM!

Well, settings wise:

If you play any games you might want to try setting the NAT tcp/udp to Endpoint Independant. Enabling Spoof Checking should be fine too.

Unless you use any Wireless b devices you'd be better shifting it to n and g mode only. If you only use n devices, then n only.

If you are not using legacy b class devices you should aim to use WPA2 Only and AES only.

DNS relay, you don't need enabled and can often introduce lag on these routers from past experience.

Enabling multi-cast streams may help too if you have a few clients on the web at the same time.

The problem with Virgin media at the moment is after 5pm traffic management on certain protocols kicks in, mainly p2p and usenet but reading lots of forums and from my own experience it looks like they havent implemented it correctly yet.

After 5pm till midnight shaping is happening on all sorts, youtube, bbc iplayer, websites aswell as p2p and usenet.

I cant even access itunes apps store after 5pm sometimes, it takes forever to load the page and mostly just times out. Shocking.
Pre 5pm and everything is fine!.

Yeah your right about the throttling and I think its a disgrace considering its 50mb, I mean WTF is the point in having it then?

I have since learned that using port 433 on usenet gives proper speeds, ports 119, 563 and 8080 are all throttled, pointless IMO!

Miss sold!

I thought the 50mb service was meant to be immune to all the traffic shaping ****e, or was that just a temporary selling point? I've noticed my speeds aren't as good as they once were but not to the levels you describe.

I too have 50mb broadband with a d-link router and originally had exactly the same problem. The route of the problem; the crappy d-link router virgin send you. I'm currently changing mine. Use BBMAX speedtest plugged directly into the modem to get an accurate speed result. I get around 48mbit/s doing that, through the dlink wireless its around 14mbit.

Also, ring up the special 50mb support line and ask for a technician to come round to your property. They are usually pretty useless but if the cable in your area is old, you may have a filter on the line which they will remove for you. These filters were to help with cable television in the early 90's and are now obsolete.

As it stands, the only limit on the 50MB (XXL) package is upload at 6GB between 15:00 and 20:00:

http://www.virginmedia.com/myvirginmedia/faster_upload_traffic_management_table.php

I expect this has something to do with the upgraded upload speeds that are being rolled out. I can't see the downstream speeds being managed until the 100MB package is released.

Obviously this has little to do with certain ports being throttled etc.
