50mm portrait lens for D7100

Yeah it's 1.7% out of the camera but after correction it seems to be negligible, I don't think he needs to be worried about it.

I never noticed any significant distortion with the 35mm DX. 1.7%is reasonable for the focal length and is fixed with 1 click in LR. That is much less distortion than most zoom lenses display.

It really doesn't just "fix" it that easily. It's still fairly noticeable, and as mentioned in the link is worse than other similar lenses.

Anyway, as I said IMO it's not anywhere near as good a lens as the FF equivelant, be that older or newer ones (older ones being more comparable in price and size). I'm not saying don't get it, just that I don't think it's as good a lens as people insist it is, and that I rarely use mine because of the issues mentioned.

Distortion really only affects architectural photos where there are obvious distortions of straight geometry. For protraits, still life and landscapes you wouldn't notice, at least I certainly haven't. The distortion is less than similar lenses like the sigma 30mm while obviously FF lenses will have less distortion over the DX frame, buy typically similar or more over FF.

To put things in perspective the distortion level is similar or less than most 24-70mm f/2.8 zooms and I never have issues with that either except for some architectural photos.

In contrast I stopped using it for landscapes because the distortion was to much for me. For portraits it'll probably be fine though, as I already mentioned.

Anyway each to their own.
