Hey guys. Quick question, can I combine 1 stick of PC2100 512mb with a PC3200 256mb? Is it worth it? Will it end up being slower then just the 512mb stick on its own? I know that I'll have to run both at the slower 166mhz speed but I can live with that for the extra memory.

The system it will be going into is my old dell 8300 box, P4 3ghz 478pin.

PC2100 is DDR266 so you will have to run both sticks @ 133Mhz. But by all mean tweak it to see how far you can push the DDR266, I have a crappy 256Mb DDR266 that will happily run DDR400 PC3200 with 2.85V 3/4/4/8 timings.

Yes it will work but Intel thrives on bandwidth so you may see a noticable performance lost running both RAM < DDR400.

Ok thanks for the help. I'll try and see how far it goes. It's some japanese brand I've never heard of before so not sure just how high a quality it is. Let's hope it will run at 166mhz atleast :)

The 512MB stick is the slowest one anyway.
So they will both run at the speed of the 512MB Stick.

There will be no reduction in speed if it's the 256MB module you are adding.
If it's the 512MB stick you are adding, then the speed increase from 256MB -> 768MB would be far more than the reduction in clock anyway.

Turns out the 512mb stick wouldn't work at all. Not sure why. It was working in the server machine that it was taken out of. So that comp is still stuck with 256mb RAM. My gf has said she'll buy me 2gb of DDR2 RAM for the computer so then she can have my old 1GB of DDR ram. :)
