55’’ (Max) TV recommendation

I've owned an LG OLED55B6V for two years now, and I can safely say that it's the best money I've ever spent on any electronic equipment ever.

For gaming specifically, the B6 needed a firmware upgrade to bring the response times down to acceptable levels, which took a while. LG delivered though, and that resolved pretty much the only problem I had with the set before buying it. Even then, after seeing it mounted on the wall and calibrated, the display is just outstanding. Believe me when I say going OLED is a point of no return - everything else looks like turds.

In general, you need to consider two factors before investing in 4K OLED:
  1. Do you have the gear to play back 4K content, with or without HDR? A lot of streaming will rely on a modern CPU, or a dedicated box, to decode the video at a stable framerate. If you're planning to use a PC then you'll need a graphics card with a modern hardware decoding engine to get the same. I use a 1050Ti which works perfectly, even for the extremely high bitrate content.
  2. Is the TV going to be close enough to the viewing position to justify 4K? The maximum viewing distance is approximately 2.2 meters (see below), beyond which you won't see any difference between 1440p/1080p and 4K.
If you can answer yes to the above, I guarantee you OLED is worth every penny. I imagine LG's latest revision of the OLED models is probably still amazing, and might even be cheaper than the £1700 I paid in 2017. If you take the plunge, don't forget to calibrate the display, and be sure to turn off all the guff in the menus regarding automatic brightness, eco mode, and colour warmth.
