I'm needing a new TV as the one I have now is really on it's last legs. I sit really close to my current set which is 49", well less than 1m away from the screen, probably about 50-60cms away. Trouble is, my GF sits at a normal distance away but can't actually see the screen well because I'm blocking it. Was thinking a bigger screen would help as there's less of the screen to block. Problem is, I think a 65" will be too big for my viewing distance. I suppose I could buy 2 TVs, one for each of us, but to be honest, I think the living room will look stupid with 2 screens. Thoughts?

Is it crazy to suggest that a bigger TV might allow you to sit further away, perhaps even next to girlfriend? Or does she smell bad or something? ;)

I've just gotten so used to sitting close to a large screen. I've tried sitting at the usual distances most people sit at but I just don't like it, despite the fact that I used to watch TV in bed from a 22" monitor connected to a PC at a distance of around 4m! I don't want to waste money on a 65" to find that the problem isn't solved.

Well it's all relative I'd imagine? If you find you're sat a touch close to the 65", does moving yourself back a bit not resolve that?

Go to specsavers. You're not supposed to sit so close to a massive screen, at .5 m for a 50" you'll get eyestrain, and you won't be able to see the whole screen without moving your eyes side to side.

Can I ask why you sit so close? at that distance surely your having to move your eyes around the screen to see everything.

I got eye strain at 5 feet away from a 55".

Your eyes must be ruined. I'd go to an opticians. Your viewing distance isn't right at all. Do you have cataracts? I'd get a 65" only to force you to sit further back. Also what kind of person sits in front of a TV blocking it for everyone else? It's something a child would do before their parent rightfully tells them to get back.

Lol, I thought the same thing... and I don't think I've ever met a girl who would let a guy get away with that either. I'd get a shoe in the back of my head!

this has to be a wind up !!

So the correct answer would be buy 2 tv's then?

a 65" for his mrs as she sits further back and a 55" for him as he sits so close he blocks the view from everybody else.

there is a guy on here who is basically medically blind. he sits as close as this guy on a 50"+ screen. he cannot see anything if he sits further back. so I'm just wondering if this guy is just as blind, if not then as above he needs a whack on the head from his mrs. also how does anyone do this in a normal living room situation? how do you sit right in front of a tv? does he have an armchair or wheely chair he puts in front of the tv. the mrs is behind him on the couch. it just seems like a ridiculous set up if so and i don't understand how his mrs has let it get this far.

The gf has never been happy with the situation. My eyesight is good, well I think it is, although at 39 years old it is definitely not as good as when I was 19! I just sit on a bean bag right in front of the set. I don't know why I prefer sitting so close, and yes I know its not what most people do, but that's just me. I do have to move my eyes a lot being so close, maybe that adds to the whole experience?

I think 2 TVs will have to be the solution, although the living area will probably look ridiculous :-o

Can you post a picture of your living room set-up?

I don't get eye strain. I actually get eye strain from sitting at normal viewing distances.

well you seemed to have evolved then as human eyes are designed to look at things in the distance. for example back in the day they would be looking out for danger like lions, tigers, etc. or deers, etc for hunting.

go ask any optician and they will tell you what you are saying is rubbish. you get eye strain for looking at objects too close to you for extended periods of time. opticians also have a 20:20:20 rule; every 20 minutes look at something at least 20 metres away for at least 20 seconds. reason being is that your eyes are at rest when they are looking at things in the distance.
