Saving up the pocket money that the wife leaves me each month and am looking at these two cameras. Was hoping to get one of them in the next few months until a larger than expected gas bill came through.

Anyway I do like the size and build quality of the 60D over the 550D but would I be better off saving the extra and getting the 550D. The HD video recording is important to me. Types of photography will be trying everything that I can, main will be family photos and portraits.

The current lenses I have are an 18-55mm kit lens from a 350D, and a Canon EFS 55-250mm. I will be looking to get rid of these and start with a Canon 50mm 1.4.

I am sticking with Canon simply because it is where I started I really like the menu system on the 350D. Just a Canon fan I guess and being pig headed by not looking at Nikon....lol.

Does the original 5D do video I did not think it did.

The 5D MkI doesn't have video.

I was in the same position, because I want start making videos, and I'm going to get the 550D when I can afford it, instead of the 600D or 60D because it's a lot cheaper, and the few extras isn't worth the extra cost for me.

I'm used to the build quality/handling of the 450D and I'm happy with it, although maybe a little too small without the battery grip but for when I'm not handling it for a long time it's fine.

I personally went for the 60D over the 550D because after using the 550D for a couple of months I started to find I was becoming frustrated with the lack of a few buttons / customisability. Also I found the 60D much more comfortable to hold, much better build quality and as I was starting to shoot sports the extra FPS and bigger buffer were huge boosts for me.

If video recording is important than maybe the swivel/tilt screen on the 60D would be an added bonus?

I forgot about the swivel/tilt screen so that would be handy. The extra FPS will also be handy down the line as I would hope to go and watch a local football/rugby game and try taking some shots.

The screen on the 60D is VERY handy at times. I honestly didn't consider that when I bought it, but it's come in very handy for macro shots, and trying to get awkward photos of my cats!

The main reason for me when I went from the 300D to the 30D was the menu system and the buttons. It's SO MUCH easier to use the xxD series over the xxxD series, despite the xxD series being a very good entry camera, I'd recommend the xxD series over the xxD for that reason alone.

Also you have video, which is nice if you want it. Personally I don't care about that at all, and would have preferred a price reduction/extra features instead of it, but the one video I took of my cat running around like a nutter, looked okay :D
