5600x vs 5800x which should I keep?

Hi guys :)

Currently have a 5600x, managed to grab a 5800x for £330. After ordering it I did some research and found it can be quite hot and with my setup (wraith Prism) may lower boost clocks and potentially net me worse performance than my 5600x.

However, with DDR5 on the way I'd imagine I'll be keeping whatever I decide on for a few years.

I play mostly VR, and use the PC for 50/50 work and gaming. I do stream VR usually too. Flat gaming I use 2x 1080p 144hz

Should I return it or sell my 5600x? I do understand that 5800x tend to be single CCD explaining the higher temperatures. I've also been told that recently undervolting has been found to actually cause issues.

I would hope the upgrade would cost me £60 plus a future investment in an AIO

Thanks in advance

Onlybyou can really answer that question.

5800x isn't designed for that wraith cooler though, if you decided to keep it you should get a better cooler, and like you said they run hot.

I run my 5800x on a NZXT. Kraken 360mm rad and I dont have any temp issues, max about 75c and boosts to 5gz, that will be a fair chunk faster than a 5600x even if you factor overclocking on that.

That being said..... The real world difference in games etc will be marginal, and that's quite a bit more money for not much more performance.

You gotta decide really.

You can run it ok with Wraith Prism cooler with some tweaks. Lowering PPT to 120 and adding a negative value such as 15 to all cores under curve optimiser will keep your temps under 85 degrees at full stress with only minimal performance loss. I had my 5800X cooled with the Prism initially before deciding to get a 360 AOI. The difference was around 1000 points in R23 Cinebench multi core scores. Whilst that may sound a lot, it doesn't really translate to anything in every day performance.

I upgraded from a 2700X to a 5600X today, looking at several benchmarks the jump from the 5600X to 5800X in terms of gaming performance was not worth it. Very pleased so far with mine.

I'm running my 5800X with the prism and hits 81c stock in cinebench R23 and 67c by lowering PPT to 125 with some curve optimiser while also scoring higher than stock.

Since you managed to snag the 5800X for a good price then I'd keep that and sell the 5600X, some games already benefit from the extra cores and it will be even more the case than in a year or two.

Intel 11400 or 3600 for value gaming. If you must have the latest and greatest for gaming then 5600x... currently £289 in-stock. £330 for a 5800x is a nice price and i'd stick with it.

The Prism cooler is better than the anaemic stealth cooler that comes in the box with the 5600x. Not sure if you're saying you want to sell the 5800x but keep the box cooler for the 5600x?

In any case I wouldn't worry personally, a 5800x represents great value at the price you paid. The Prism cooler is fine and you can leave upgrading the cooler for another day.

Based on what you've said you're doing, i dont think the 5800 does much more for you than the 5600 - personally I would sell the 5800 as you'll get more for it and put more money towards a better graphics card (when you chose to get one) to get better fps for the streaming VR.

The extra money he can get from selling 5800 does not really help in the current situation on GPU market.

I would keep 5800 if he plans to use it for several years. Our next-gen upgrade is going to be CPU+MOBO+RAM combo and most likely at a higher price.

Indeed, but money isn't just for the next few weeks - he can use it when they're available, or in the next gen - it's still money saved.

Whilst the next gen is going to be all of those things, the difference between a 5600 and 5800 in a few years, for what he does, will be minimal compared to available items then.

The reason people choose the 5600x instead of the 5800x is because it`s cheaper and it does everything they need. If you can afford to buy both on a whim then cost is clearly not an issue. So get yourself a nice AIO to cool the 5800x and enjoy yourself.
