i have a 5600x paired with a 3080 10gb,(hopefully going to upgrade the gpu after christmas to a 7900xtx)

is it worth upgrading my cpu to a 5800x3d or should i go AM5 7600 (regardless of whether i upgrade the GPU or not?)

cheers

Depends.

Do you have the funds to do a full system upgrade?

A 5800x3d is faster than a 7600 cpu. See my post here.

Going with a 5800x3d will have the advantage of just slotting in to your current rig.

However the advantage of going AM5 would be your on the newer platform and can then upgrade to newer cpus in the future.

Personally if you choose to go AM5 now don't go with a 7600. Save a bit more until you can get a 7800x3d and then do the upgrade.

i have enough to get a mb,7600x and some ram, which comes out to about £490 new, there are some 2nd hand options too i have.
i can sell my old 5600x,mb and ram as well so might get back 150 for those.

ive only struggled on this sytem playing starfield.

I keep saying it but starfield is a odd game performance wise.

Your pc is still adequate for the majority of games out there.

However what I said previously still applies. If you do go am5 save up for the 7800x3d.

Also be aware that others who upgraded to a 5800x3d for starfield saw little gains.

5600x is still a fine CPU, I'd wait until well into next year for a AM5 upgrade with Zen 5.

I have a 5800X + 3080 and it just never seemed worth going to a 5800X3D, I probably would have done if I’d had an older gen ryzen CPU though. Likewise moving to Zen 4 and the 7800X3D was a better upgrade but didn’t want to jump to a new platform to early and the costs especially motherboards seemed quite high for what they offered so I’m holding out till Zen 5 next year as the improved performance jump should help justify the costs.

Starfield just runs poorly on Nvidia GPUs right now, a 6800XT is 30% faster than a 3080 which is way off what the usually differences are so there is bound to be some optimisation improvements coming.

If you only gaming I don't see the point of the platform upgrade whilst still using the 3080

I have 5800x3d + 3080 for 1440p , I'd see bigger difference upgrading GPU before platform

Personally I am waiting for Zen 5 as there will be new boards and AM4 with my 5900X is still brilliant. If I were you I would upgrade CPU and sit tight for a year.

This is silly, you want him to spend a full system upgrade so he can upgrade latter? When he can have a faster system now for £220
Makes perfect sense and is what I did. The 7600 is perfectly fine for most games by the time it isn't the 8800X3D will be heavily discounted, that's when I will upgrade. Meant I didn't pay the early adopter tax on the high end chips. Remember the 7600 can also be sold later too and will proportionally lose less than if you bought a high end CPU on release.

But the 5800x3d will cost less now. And is fasted. And will have a better resale value.

There is less to be lost by getting the 5800x3d and it’s faster for now. But the time he upgrades the new set up will cost less too

hi all
i ended up buying a new MB and ram for £270 ASROCK B650M-HDV/M.2 +32GB (2x16GB) Corsair DDR5
i picked a 2nd hand 7600 up for £120 so not too bad and i can up the cpu later and wont lose much

plus i now have my 5600x,tuf gaming b550-plus and 4000mhz memory to sell to help a little with costs.

then i can hopefully get a few quid for my 3080 and put that towards a 7900xtx maybe next month or after christmas.

I've got both. There's not much in it to be fair, go AM5 now prices have dropped and sell the old gear or just drop in a 5800X3D if you want a low hassle upgrade. I don't think you'll go wrong either way, the biggest factor is do you want to spend less now. I suspect the prices of RAM and storage are going to go up now they've cut back chip production.

Sounds like a great buy there, lots of years of upgrade potential. I think you'll be set now for the foreseeable.

Why not just get a 5800X3D now though in that circumstance then pick up 8800X3D later on when the whole AM5 platform has been discounted rather than paying top whack now especially for stuff like the boards.
