Hi all,

I was wondering, apologies if this may sound stupid.

I know most Broadband works well at all times (well, a connection at least ). But i've herd stories about people losing their connect for weeks or even months at a time!

I rely on the internet for my work, I don't need massive transfrer speeds for the essentials, just a connection. If I did lose the internet (broadband) and fitted a 56k modem for backup and connected to telephone line, are there any company's that offer a kind of PAYG service with no subscription anymore? I would not know which number to user in the dial-up.

There are probably free Dial up services around (donno how secure they are) there used to be free ISPs on the weekends from that one service when everyone was on dialup... 5 years on theres bount to be free 24/7 ones out there somewhere.

Edit: I cant find any free ones but heres a list of free sign up/monthly fee and pay as you go dial up http://www.freebielist.com/isp.htm

I've got a PCI 56K modem in my bits draw, and every time I open it I wonder why I havent chucked it out yet. I might wait and then proudly take it to an episode of Antiques Roadshow sometime in the future.

PK!

That costs ~£50 unless you sign up for the 12 month contract.

There's a contract-less one where you pay for only the months you use it (I think its ~£12.99/mo for 3GB bandwidth) so you just top it up when you need it. I have the link on my laptop but I can't access it at the mo.

I'd use you phone as a modem, and have done in the past not too shabby almost the same speed as my BB :( (the shame of living in the "country")

www.fireflyinternet.com - Instant Internet Access panel on the right hand side. I use this for testing etc, it's a good service that is always present; no contract, no CC, works from anywhere.

Sorry for bringing this thread back up guys but I am looking into getting a 'backup 56k' modem ready if needed (still have not done it :) ).

The above link seems like a decent site, and they have a prepaid option too. Anyone have any experience with them?

Thanks

most decent routers have built in dialup rollover backup. (a least my couple year old US robotics does) i.e. when the connection drops it can automatically switch to modem link.

If you need you inet connection for business, then usually business ISP agreements will include back up dial in access and cost a lot more han a regualr home user account. Alternatively look at getting cable and ADSL in, bonding / load sharing the line there by giving better connectivity and redundancy. Also bear in mind that if you currenly use ADSL, and your phone line goes down, chances are dialup won't work either. The suggestion of some of the GSM adapters is interesting, perhap check out a mobile phone contract which allows you to use your mobile as a bluetooth tethered modem. As you are probably already paying for a mobile contract anyway?
