Apologies if this has been discussed before.

I was browsing the "The 800x600 MAXIMUM screenshot thread (56k no no)" thread, and it suddenly dawned on me that broadband has been available for commercial use for a few years now, therefore is the "(56k no no)" warning really necessary? Are there many people who browse these forums still using a 56k connection?

I started this thread because I was curious about the last question, not because i thought the thread title needed discussing. :)

Are there statistics that the website owners can get hold of which tell us how many of the population in this forum are still using 56k?

My mate skeeteruk said he still knows people on 56k.
I personally don't knwo any.
Aside that, 56k network is suspended at the end of this year, main provider kpn here decided it costed mroe as it earned the 56k network and at the end of this year it's byebye 56k.

I personally just thought, why not earlier since the broadband penatration is 99% anyway here (source = wiki).

Personally I think such warnings should be left out, I dont know what the situation is there in the UK, but here you can get broadband cheaper as 56k, so imo only the stuid keep 56k...

I think I know one guy who is on 56k. But he uses it for msn and myspace and thats about it. So he doesn't really need anything faster.

I remember when I first got cable. It was such a great day, downloading at 40kb/sec instead of 4 :D

Loking forward to my 20meg upgrade soon too :)

I was discussing this with my cousin......used to wait ages for a 1mb file downloading. I remember needing to download some driver or something to went and had my dinner and came back and it was still downloading.

Love my 400-500kb/s :D

I was happy to go onto ADSL but my initial experience of connecting it was dreadful, due to a faulty router. It just took me a while until realising it(havent had to previously deal with it after all) and eventually exchanging it but the new one worked. Then I was reborn!:)

I know one person that uses this, and I use it during holidays (I.E When I go to technologicaly chalenged relatives houses

I know people with no internet - but nobody with 56K, even my grandparents have ADSL.

Also, my ADSL just got faster tonight - used to max out at 250KB/s, got disconnected about an hour ago and now maxing at around 820KB/s :)

If I was on 56k and I saw a big thread I would just click back...I don't see the point in all these warnings. However, the 800*600 doesn't break the table, and you can always link to your mahoosive picture of your computer.

56k is still used a lot for business use.

Like ATMs?

Heeey, heeey, 56K..... :D

My mum still uses it. So do my inlaws. And my wife's nan too. And her brother.

It's not totally obsolete. Just very nearly.

I am sure your nan is into case modding, too

I was one of the first ppl to get ADSL, signing up for bt Openworld about a year before it was roleld out. It was osmething like 50 quid a month for 1/2 a mbit back then. But it was well worth it. I remember coming home from school and it being activated. Went onto napster (yes it was that long ago) and downloaded some songs. It used to take about 20 mins per song on 56k, but i could actually stream the music almost live with broadband.

Now, ppl get quirky when they don't have at least 4mbit. :)
