56k Users?

Tiscali's service pretty much runs at 56k speeds during peak times and you can't connect to any games servers or run torrents.

So, in fact, 56k > Tiscali.

Seriously.

My parents are still on dial-up as are a lot of folk in their area, mainly as BT only got round to putting ADSL in last year (a Glasgow exchange).

Fortunately my parents are moving to broadband in the summer with Sky when they buy a new laptop (currently using Duron 800 MHz w/256Mb RAM + WinME).

I don't know anyone still on dial up these days. I've been off dial up for many years now as I was on ISDN before Broadband.

I started out on a 9600 which I ran a BBS over and upgraded speeds over the years :p

There are probably some people on here who once upon a time used 4800 or even slower, prehistoric! ;) :D

Oh god, 56k *Shudder*

Terrible, terrible memories.

I was SO happy when I finally got ADSL, I went on a downloading spree, heh.

My very first download via ADSL was Exchange 2000 SP3 !!!!

Eeek 56k

I was one of the first people in the country to get Cable Modem and 512kb seemed like heaven. Now I am on 22mb ADSL lol, its sloooowwww! I want 100mb ;)

Haha.. the connection in my workplace:

I knew it was congested but jeez.. upload rate is twice as much as download. And no there aren't a lot of people using the connection at the moment. It's just the exchange in the area was designed for maybe 200 phones and is now coping with about 500 broadband connections! Not good.

There are a lot of rural areas of ireland that still aren't in range of their nearest exchange to get broadband. The limit is 3 miles because of the shoddy cables eircom used and also the second rate broadband exchange method. One company offered them a 10 mile limit with better connection speeds but the other offered 3 miles for a bit cheaper.

My parents house only just got connected up to ADSL last october. Before that my dad had a company satellite link. 56k was better for gaming then satellite though so I was :(

Quoted the truth there - one of the many reasons i left em to go with a decent company ;)

I live so far out in the sticks that I couldn't even manage 56k.. it was always half... 28k

Even now I'm limited to 1MB ADSL :(

I used to have 56K up until last year until i upgraded to my 10MB connection. Was a pain in the arse, downloading at 10 kbs usually , highest speed i used to get was 30KBS.

We couldn't get ADSL until 2004. I can remember on 56k I once downloaded 3 whole Linux ISO's. Took a while! I used to just leave the computer on and at night it would wake me up with the sound of redialling!

I remember having single calls lasting 10 days+ on my old smoothwall box + dedicated line (no ISDN here). Certainly had to pay for the privilege though!

There may not be many people left on dialup these days but I'd wager there are a few people accessing the forums with GPRS which can be a lot worse!

 Just remembered something, once i was download a 200mb patch for this game right on 56K, it took 2 days and when i woke up there was 10 minutes left and then the phone rang and i got disconnected!
