56K

Yep, it was 99% for a few years like because some of the exchanges as you say in rural areas didn't have many users and it wouldn't be financially viable to enable them for broadband but a year or two ago they just did it anyway to get the figure to 100% enabled

Wherever you got that from is rubbish.

My parents in laws can ONLY get dial-up and there's no mention of BT supplying broadband. The only hope they have is Aramiska (which is crap anyway).

was gonna say there is bound to be some really obscure locations where the BT exchange is probably still manually operated :p

on a side note arent BT planning a complete overhaul of the telecom network over the next ~20yrs (reality somewhere near the next century i guess)

The only person I know that uses a 56k connection is a guy in Kazakhstan.

Not Borat (although he does claim to drink horses milk).

How do you milk a... wait no, please don't.

Very few people have 56k but does it really matter? Some people might be on download limits and may not want to load a couple hundred MB of images (random pic thread for example)... not sure why it should bother anyone.

I think the "56k warning" is just one of them general internet things thats stuck around, if only as a warning that the page contains a load of content. Someone might not want to wait for it or doesn't have the bandwidth at that time.

I view the forums with 80 posts per page as I hate clicking next all the time. Threads with a lot of pics can still take a while to load, even on fast broadband. A page in the screenshot thread in the games section, for example, takes forever as a lot of people use imageshack which doesn't like going over 150kb/s and weighs in at about 5mb. If it downloaded at full speed then on 4mb thats 10 seconds, on 512k thats a over a minute and on 56k its over 12 mins!

Remember not many people generally have more than 4mb ish internet. Most people I know have ADSL Max and don't generally get great speeds. They don't do anything about it because they don't know any different. The nation is not all geeks like us :p

...Remember Pr0n on 56k? how did we ever survive?! :D

tbh there is no reason to put 56k warnings. anyone still on 56k should be more than aware that threads can contain plenty of pics regardless of warning.
True, it's very silly nowadays. Most people do have broadband (it is no more expensive than 56k and can even be cheaper) and for those who don't, as you say, they will know very well to expect a very slow browsing experience.

On 10Mb soon to be 20Mb. Would never use 56k again even if it was for an emergency.
So you'd rather have no internet than use dial-up? I used 56k when I moved house last time, while I was waiting for my ADSL to be activated. For browsing text-based forums it is perfectly adequate.

I could never use 56k again! Used it one a friends lappy a few weeks ago after I'd fixed it for her. It didn't have a network card and I wanted to grab a few important updates. Wow it's painful! I'd rather just watch TV while they fixed my lovely broadband than use dialup! I'd just watch some films or something until they got it sorted!

I guess it would be ok for checking emails and browsing OcUK, but it's pretty useless for anything else!

Needless to say you (and I) would only use it in dire circumstances :p Gotta be infinitely better than having no internet at all though.

Back to the part about the 56k warning remarks, I don't get why people say that, it's not like people on dial up are sucked into the thread and have to wait for the pics to load. :p

People can hit that back button or stop button, sorted.

And if there at least slighlty compitent they will not use the nice feature of "Show Images (including attached images and images in

Definately people that are still on 56k in Britain, I know a few of them. Normally they live out in the sticks and it would cost a lot of money to upgrade their ancient lines (about 10 miles of new cable) etc.

Interestingly, their office 100 metres "closer" to the exchange is able to receive 512k but not at their house...
