57 plate Audi A3 purchase, anything to look out for?

Scratch that, found a Kia proceed 1.4 petrol, 11 plate with under 50k for the same money so we are going to look at that tomorrow instead.

This is an amazing journey. From the misty fields of Audi, through the cursed caves of MG, to where I expect the real meat of the story will unfold, at the peak of Mount KIA.

Seriously though, as someone who generally keeps an eye on this point in the market (seems the sweet spot for me), the Focus advice seems right to me. It's been that way for many years :p

Ignore the mileage, look at how it's been looked after!!

I know someone with a golf that is now getting on for 5 years old. Low mileage at an average of 4k a year and guess what?

It's never even had a service!

That's right! it's still got the same oil, wipers, plugs, belts etc that it left the factory with half a decade ago as the owner financed it and now can't afford to run it.

Yet they managed to afford to buy it when the finance term ended? Odd...

It's due to end next month, they are currently trying to get a loan to pay it off but it sounds like they are struggling to get anything without a **** interest rate.

So went to see the Kia. It was well mankey.

The door has this like black trim stuff at the top which was peeling. The fuel tank had corrosion on the underside, there were sratches and scuffs everywhere. The clutch didnt feel right.

Low mileage though lol

Just been driven those low miles by someone who rides the clutch :p

Isn't a corroding fuel tank one of the problems you get from leaving the car un-used for months on end? :)

You lot can take the **** as much as you like but I've bought several low mileage older cars over the years, that have been kept well and have ended up being very good buys.

This one wasn't however.

I don't think we are taking the **** but the point we are making is any car can have problems regardless of the mileage, you could buy a brand new car and it will fail in 10 miles and then fail the next 1000 miles and so on.
My parents have the same mentality when it comes to buying cars but I believe it can go either way, it all depends how the previous owner treated the car.

WELL KEPT is your key when looking at cars this age 40k or 80k isn’t really the issue it’s condition which is why ruling out all cars over 50k is bonkers. I agree i’d Avoid a moon millage retires taxi with 3/400k on it but an 80k on a focus that has been well looked after is hardly terminal and no it won’t blow up at 100k my Mondeo has cost me less for the 40k over 100 that it’s done than it did for the last 40k below!
