Have a thermalright assassin king 120 se cooler running with this cpu and it idles in the 30s and hasn't gone over 65 degrees at load. Thought the 5700x3d is supposed to run hot and didn't think a cheap 20 quid cooler would be doing such a good job so I'm worried I've done something wrong?

I know how stupid it sounds as of course it's high temps that are a cause for concern. Just looking for some info as I don't know enough about this stuff and if I'm just being a moron then that's fine as well lol.

Do you live in a fridge or have you underclocked it? Mine idles around 39 and can hit around 60 under load. This is using an AIO. What speed is it running at in Afterburner?

What makes you think they run hot? They're well known for the opposite especially compared to the 5800X3D.
Mine idles around 30C but I do have -30 CO on all cores.

I have the exact same HSF on a 5800X3D, -30 offset, I get similar temps to you under load.

Currently at 24c idle.

The 5700X3D doesn't run as hot as the 5800X3D out of the box.

This is mine after 3 hours of heavily modded Cyberpunk 2007 under a 280mm AIO at -30 on all cores -

Where do i go in afterburner to check the speed it's running at? Sorry haven't got a clue about this stuff. Don't have it underclocked either. Just put it in the cpu slot and put on paste. That's why i'M so worried now

well im idling at about 45 and load at 77, guess i might have mesed install up, whats this -30 thing going on in here?

Curve optimizer, you can't overclock the X3D chips on AM4 (except maybe a few mhz on the BCLK) so all you can really do is lower voltage.
There are plenty of guides out there but if you check your BIOS you can set it there or use PBO2 Tuner to set it. -30 is the max you can set and is the 'lowest' voltage, lots of 5700X3Ds seem to happily sit at -30 but if you're going to try it then the sensible thing is to set it in steps and test in between.

I think that nowadays undervolting is often a more effective approach than overclocking in most real world scenarios. In some cases I've gained more performance from undervolting than from overclocking at stock volts. Undervolting is now my standard go-to first thing.

I just remembered that I previously turned precision boost overdrive off in the bios because it was making my 3700x too hot. Maybe that's why the 5700x3d has lower temps?

PBO does nothing for the 5700X3D. Only CO and BCLK really do anything. If your old chip was being overclocked then yeah it'll get warmer, the 3700x did have higher clocks anyway.

You may have only paid £20 for your cooler but Thermalright makes very good coolers at affordable prices, quite often massively undercutting the competition. I have their Peerless Assassin SE120 on my 7800x3d and I have yet to see it pass 65 degrees C with a -28 CO.

Yeah I think i'm just surprised that it's giving me those temps without any underclocking or undervolting since that's how most other people seem to be getting good temps with this cpu. Think I just underestimated how good the thermalright coolers are. I used to use the stock wraith prism one and it's so much better than that it's unreal. Unbelievable for 20 euro. As you said they're very competitive in the market.

perfectly normal
play squad's my old 5700x3d would sit at 50c, its an amazing CPU.
probably the best CPU for an ITX build at this time
