5770 not working - am I missing anything

Hello

Not sure if anyone can help but support is closed and I may be missing the obvious.

I had a prebuilt overclocked system delivered today. Installed Win 7 pro 64bit, registered the licence. I then installed the motherboard drivers from the CD, updated windows, and then tried to get the XFX5770 running. The XFX CD has a popup saying no XFX card found. Installed ATI drivers from the ATI site but after doing that there was a popup saying drivers may not have installed correctly.

The only CD's I have are the motherboard and the 5770, and that's all I would think I would need.

In device manager the only display adaptor listed is standard VGA.

The motherboard BIOS has several options.

One toggle option is always use VGA/only use VGA if no PCI and I have selected 2nd option.

There is another option for non VGA display to use PCI or PCIE and I have tried everything under this option.

Whenever I made any changes I have restarted and tested by plugging my monitor into every port on the 5770. I cannot get it to work at all. The fan is on so I know it's getting power. I have reseated the card and then again gone through all the steps above. I only have a VGA monitor, but the card came with an adaptor so i would think that would be ok.

Am I missing anything? Or will I be on the phone to overclockers in the morning?

I think you need some sort of driver installed first for it to be recognised properly, I've had this problem before.

Try connecting to the internet and running windows update to get a generic driver installed at least. It should be an optional update.

Once that's done, restart and download the latest drivers from the ATI website (Catalyst 10.6) then install them.
 
There is known issues with XFX5770 + W7 64bit.

I tried for 3weeks trying to get my 5770 working on W7, but it just wasnt having any of it.

Soon as i installed vista, everything was perfect.

Download Driversweeper, delete all ATI folders and then run DS and get rid of any remaining folders

Boot up your PC and wait to see if Windows will install the card, if not, Load the drivers from the XFX cd and dont restart. wait for about 15-20 mins for the card to settle and then restart and install the 10.6 drivers over the top

If that doesn't work, then you either have a dodgy Dvi connector, a dodgy port or just a different problem with W7

@alexhull24, I have run windows updates several times and no generic drivers are installing :( I have installed the Catalyst 10.6 but still nothing.

If windows update is detecting it, it still might not install automatically, but need checking as an optional update. As said, I did have this issue myself. However, if it's not detecting it at all, MiNxYyY's advice seems sound enough. Not sure what leaving the card to 'settle' means though?
 
I just meant that its good if he leaves his system just running for a bit, so that the card can adjust, Sounded ok in my head :p
 
just so it gives the pc time to adjust to new hardware, not sure if its a common occurance, but i just like to let me system sit for a little bit before restarting :)
 
OK, I can't really see what difference it'd make once the driver was installed unless there's a certain program that benefits from detecting the new driver somehow. Who knows really, ATI probably don't even know, they seem a tad rubbish at fixing these kind of issues.

Can I ask if your card was showing up under device manager when you were have problems with W7? I cannot get windows to see anything apart from the motherboard VGA port.

tried all that, thanks, and still windows cannot see the card. might try the other PCI slot to see if that changes anything

I'm not sure how I would do this. If I select update drivers for the generic VGA device windows will not let me install ATI drivers as the current VGA drivers are upto date. If I try to install legacy hardware I can browse to the driver but only get a blank option when I have to select the type of device.

I really think the problem is, for whatever reason W7 cannot see the card. If it could see it there should be an entry of some sort about it in device manager with an error icon reporting the lack of a driver. As far as windows is concerned I am trying to install drivers for a device it knows nothing about :(

I wonder if I could fit the card in my ancient XP box. Off to try that I think.

There is only 1 video device in device manager, it's the onboard VGA and it's enabled. The driver is the current one according to windows.Checking the device ID via google shows it's the motherboard VGA.

The 5770 cannot be seen in device manager.

Thanks for all the replys :) No I do not have another working box that the card will fit in. I rang support this morning and they have said to return it to them for RMA.
