So I just put together my new Pc

i5
GIGABYTE GA-P55M-UD2 LGA 1156
8gb g.skill ram
xfx 5770
corsair 750tx
creative xfi xtrememusic sound card
windows 7 64 bit

installed a few games, and about 5min into anything I get tan vertical lines across the screen and am forced to reboot.

There's another thread with people having the same issue, but with the 5870. Their solution was to flash the gpu bios with a newer version.

Has anyone who has run into this problem on a 5770 fixed this by updating the bios (or any other method?)

I ask before trying because I have never done this before and wouldn't know what to do if things go wrong.

Quite a few people have fixed (or mostly) the issue by either updating to the 9.12 hotfix driver. Or setting the PCIE speed to 101mhz in the BIOS. Others have fixed it by updating the motherboard BIOS if your board shipped with an early one. I would flash the GPU as a last resort personally.
Strangely the 9.12 driver works fine for me, but the hotfix version caused problems with artifacts on the mouse pointer and in certain games, and a few driver crashes on the desktop.

Before flashing, if you have a warranty i would try to rma, if you have an overclock on it i would lower it, it screams vrm or cooling issues.

I'm using the hotfix.

I now get a brown screen 5 min into any game. It's the same thing as the vertical lines, just looks different now. Also the screen flickers constantly on menu screens.

Unfortunately anyone who's taken a 5xxx card back so far, have had it returned saying it tests out fine. I did have the giant mouse pointer issue myself until the 9.12 catalyst, and as I said artifacts in some games. I would exhaust a few more possibilities before returning the card, maybe look for a newer BIOS for your motherboard etc, even try moving any PCI cards around if you have them, or swap ram sticks into different slots etc.
Those drivers you're using are the standard 9.12 I think, the hotfix ones can be found here, the 1 file contains 32 and 64bit drivers.

Yeah I did some googling and found out about the hotfix and installed it.

I've also already made sure my mobo was up to date.

when your PC reboots do you get a BSOD error message when windowns reboots (even though there wasnt a bluescreen)?

Im having the exact same problem as you, but im getting the BC Code 124

I'm getting the windows was not shut down properly

Start windows (last known working configuration)
Start windows normally

message

But that's just because I have to hold the power button in until it turns off as it's the only way to reboot it.

It's really strange how dodgy the 5xxx seem to be for a lot of people. I've noticed the worst offenders seem to be on Asus motherboards, but as you civic have a Gigabyte it's very strange. Let's hope that AMD/ATI suss out the real reason for the problem very soon and issue a proper fix, even if it's a BIOS flash for the cards eh.

So the current latest 5770 gpu bios found on tech are not solving the problem for anyone as they have been with the 5870?

mine reboots itself

@R34pz

i am using an asus mobo, looks like im screwed then :(

I have the exact same problem with my 5770. I'm so fed up with it that I'm going to buy a cheapy Nvidia card and then buy a Fermi, upon release. Ridiculous how many people are have problems with the 5 series. Never buying ATI again.

I've read guys that many have fixed their problems with Asus motherboards by manually setting the PCIE speed in the BIOS to 101mhz. It's worth a try at least, it may well fix most of the problems.

I'm having the same issue dude. Tried everything everyone's suggested in various combinations with no joy, RMA'd to have it returned (coulda spent that £30 on something nice :( ). Try it on another rig if you can to see if it's a hardware issue.

Unfortunately Devrij's right, it seems highly dependent on the rig you stick the card in. One card can be completely unusable in one machine, and then be absolutely flawless in another. This is the worst kind of problem if ATI don't sort out the reason it's happening, because nobody wants to be stuck with something that was a complete waste of quite a bit of money and no chance of a refund.

Amen! Buying a whole new (Asus:eek:) mobo and am hoping that'll solve my troublems. If it does, sweet, if not...I'll use it to prop up my wobbly desk.

I took the card and tried on my old Pc which I had given to my mom when I built this one.

Nforce 680i sli
E6600 Core 2
4gb OCZ ram
corsair 750 tx
x-fi xtrememusic
Windows 7 64 bit

First of all I couldn't get the sound to work through the sound card no matter what I tried. I didn't try onboard as I was tired of messing with it and just wanted to test the 5770. I booted up Team Fortress 2 and as usual about 5 min into the game I got the problem. Except this time instead of vertical tan lines the entire screen just went black.

Have you tried any of the various "fixes" that other people have suggested? Setting PCI-e frequency to 101, for example. None of them worked for me, but for some reason raising the clocks slightly in ati overdrive did seem to reduce the frequency of erors from 5 secs into game to maybe 20 seconds :unimpressed face:
