I'm also having problems with vertical line crashing on a Powercolour 5870. I've tried everything including flashing the bios to the latest ATI version dated 2009-11-12, using the profile tweak and disabling the ATI High Definition Audio Device. I've tried all the different driver revisions from 9.10 to 9.12 Hotfix. The crash only happens in graphically demanding 3D games and I only noticed it once I started playing COD MW2 and Arma 2. I usually play Flight Sim games such as FSX, which run for hours no problem. The only way I can get COD MW2 to run more than 5 minutes is to reduce the memory to 900 from default 1200 and the clock to 725 from default 850 whilst increasing the Vcore to 1.175 using MSI Afterburner. I thought it might be a temperature issue so I logged the temperatures using GpuZ and they never go over 70C, even so, the card sometimes crashes well before then. The PSU is a 'be quiet! Dark Power Pro 750W' which successfully powered a 280 GTX without any issues. I rebuilt the PC with a new HD and Win 7 64 install when I bought the 5870 so it has no remnant Nvidia drivers. The rest of the system comprises an i7 965 @ 4Ghz, 6Gb RAM, Asus P6T Delux (latest bios), SB X-fi Win 7 64 in an Antec 1200 case with lots of cooling. I raised a support ticket with AMD but they are very slow, I suppose it's the time of year. I think that some of these cards have not been tested properly and there is a hardware issue rather than a driver issue. I am considering sending the card back after restoring the original Bios however if they run it for a few minutes it will probably be fine and they'll send it back. Also, like many of you here, I use the PC every day and waiting weeks or longer for a replacement is not viable. I've been building my own PC's for years and can remember sending off to the USA for a 3DFX Voodoo when they weren't yet available in the UK, costing £200 plus import duty, to replace my ATI Mach 64! This 5870, although very fast, has caused me more headaches than any other card I have ever owned.
