Hello all,
My student loan hasn't come in yet and its already burning a hole in my pocket, currently running a 3870x2, now the 58 series are out am considering one. should i wait for the x2 models and does anyone have any idea when they are coming or if they are here already? or should i stick with my 3870. Please consider i wanna play far cry 2, fall out 3, etc with the graphics maxed out!!! just because i am greedy. Or as a final option how about crossfiring 2 3870x2's??? any help appreciated!

just as an addon i wanna play games maxed out i thought res always came at a top end limit or does it depend on summet else?

Yeah, really :confused: Wish I could have afforded nice toys when I was an undergrad.

Anyway, for gaming at 1920*1080, and assuming a limited budget, I would go for the 5850. It will eat most games alive at that res, and will save you £100 over the 5870.
 
5850 would probably be more than good enough at that res.But at moment you will pay top $ to get one.
Hang on for a month or so and hopefully we'll see some price drops :)
 
am doing computing aswell failed at IT w/ crim last year but i had my reasons!!! custody battle which i won so it all came good in the end!!!

No-one knows for sure on either count. The guess is, late November and $599 (which would translate to around £450).

A 5870x2 would be very much overkill for a 1080p screen. The 30" 2560*1600 screens owners are mainly the ones that will be looking at the 5870x2.


edit, wait... you're taking custody of a child, you're a student, and you're buying high-end hardware?! The mind boggles!
 
really? :S that late and expensive? geez. ill take a 5870 then, no way am i waiting that long. >.<
only wish the 2Gb model was out :/ i know if i but a 5870 now ill regret it. might not bother. its slower than my x2 anyways :/ fail...

You will definately need some 'me' time then and why not on a good gpu :)

Would still hang on for a bit if I were you - mainly because I would hope that the prices for the 5800 series will drop a bit when they've been out a bit longer, current shortages have been fixed and if nvidia does have something 'new' and good at a reasnoble price coming, it comes out.

Although my upgrade is from a 260 , the above is the stance I'm taking.
 
my old 3870x2 used to struggle at 1920x1200 with aa turned on but my new hd5870 runs aa x4/x8 no problems at all.
 
You must be some kind of super dad/mum to juggle so much and to afford it all. Gratz on the custody thing.

My vote goes to the 5850 for ~£200 which to me offers an outstanding value/performance ratio. They are in high demand, higher than the 5870 for this reason so if you want one in the near future order a Sapphire now as they have a large stock arriving Monday.

The 5870x2 won't be out until November and I'm almost certain you'd need a new power supply to run it.

Check the benchmarks for both on Toms Hardware (there are other technology websites) if you want a more statistical analysis.
