580 power usage

Hi, ive got a stock 580 and I am interested to know wot is the power used when lookin on the net, on reviews theres idle and when in game power info no other unless im missin that part in reviews lol

are you asking what power it uses when you are doing normal stuff are gaming?

what PSU are using? and the rest of your system as well?

My system with a stock 580, I7 2700k overclocked to 4.6ghz with speedstep enabled, several hard drives and watercooled pulls 115w - 130w whilst typing this.

Rough guess is less than 200 watts. Depends on the rest of your system as well. You can get a plug in wall monitor to measure it for around £17

if you are just online or word processing extra the card isn't going to be working much, so basically, minimum watts of around 130ish

Just snoozed mine - machine uses 250W, & that's including 2 cards idling at 40W idle. Max I've seen is under the duress of PrimeGrid GeneferWR CUDA & that was 650 total for the whole system.

Hi yes 40W idle & max of ~360 under maximum duress, definition of which depends on the specific type of work it's doing. E.g SETI says 99% but it's actually only using ~240, PrimeGrid World Record units say 99% but can squeeze another 50W out of that. Actually that gives even more headroom...

Power use in monetary terms is irrelevant to home users. If a couple of quid a year difference is important to you I'd recommend you reconsider your high end PC hobby full stop

As above - the difference in power draw between cards is a few quid a year assuming heavy usage over the year. For an average user it's probably a quid.

And if you're worried about a quid's electricity then you can save a shed load more not playing games .

While that's completely true, you should consider the impact on the environment. If all high-end gamers slashed 50w off their PC's load with more efficient components, you'd be looking at saving quite a few trees (obviously they'd be environmentally friendly and recycle their old stuff to friends and family ). I know it's not much, but I think we all need to be more responsible for our energy use. When my PSU recently started to burn out, I went out and spent a little extra on a Gold+ PSU

Anyway, that's my 2 cents on that issue!

I you had any idea how PC components are made, the byproducts and what they are made from, a few kWh is a drop in the ocean not worth worrying about. Switch to energy saving bulbs and reduce your consumption of plastic tat, then you can enjoy your computer with a clear(er) conscience

^^ that must be at idle right ? unless the 580 is much more power efficient than the 480

my single 480 with a I7 3770k - both slightly overclocked

is about 115W at idle

350W under load ! - I've seen >400W running Furmark
