5800 series stock.

My money is on it being a rumour, TSMC will be cranking out chips for ATi as fast as it can.
Not if they're under contract to Nvidia they won't be. If TMSC have fulfilled their obligations to ATI for the 5870, ATI will need to wait their turn again.

There was a rumour floating around a month or two ago saying that Nvidia was buying up TMSCs capacity to make crappy GPUs just to stop ATI making more 5970s...

If the 5970 turns up at around £500 then it will be decent enough value for enthusiasts but expensive enough to stop it selling out too quickly, meaning the supply should be reasonable. And if ATi can continue to ship the 5770 in decent numbers then they should be alright, even if this rumour is true. But from what I've read elsewhere the numbers of 5850/5870 cards is due to increase this month and further again next month, not drop off altogether.

TSMC are muckin it up for everybody, wether you have have preference for red or green. Surley this had to happen when both players use the same company to produce their chips. Is there no other company capable of making these things?

ATI have Global foundaries that can.
It makes NO sense why they don't.

EDIT : If Nvidia have bought up TSMC's time, surely that's anti competetive :O?.

well that doesn't really offset the problem, its not like we were talking about it being discontinued permanently. The problem is TSMC which as we know is making the 40nm chips for both ATI and Nvidia. However they can only be contracted to one company at a time. It is pretty obvious that ATI do have an order unfulfilled and as said in an earlier post I think they will be focusing on 5970s before having to pass the torch to Nvidia for there release.

I don't know who you spoke to at AMD but I seriously doubt a customer services representative would be privy to information like that. I believe you've been misled but I'm not having a go at you.

If you read the article it suggests that we should start seeing improved availability mid-late December which is an improvement on your information of Q1-Q2

Also Global Foundries as I understand it are a separate company (although AMD do hold a significant interest in the company) and are tooled for a 32nm process not 40nm which would mean billions of dollars of investment and probably 6 months to get a fab operation by which time TSMC should have their issues fixed and Nvidia have a rival on the market.

They could change it to a 32nm Fabrication, which would take less time than implementing 40nm.

Officially, the problem is a 'chamber mismatch'. This is where a tool, likely a plasma etch chamber, is out of calibration. Basically, if you set it to 5, it works like a 3 or a 7, it is 'off'. This can happen for a number of reasons, but semiconductor process engineers spoken to by SemiAccurate say that this is a bring up error, it doesn't just happen in the middle of a run.

Going with the flow of the forum lets just blame NVidia for industrial sabotage. :p

well no your right after looking again there all not deactivated, looks like its just sapphire and rightly so.

Most people who bought sapphire was left with bags of problems with the cards due to rushed jobs and they released more than the others.

Probably pulled the plug on them till they sort it out.

a lot of e-tailers aren't taking orders for the 58** series. The reason: because supply is so bad currently and demand is high there are huge waiting lists and companies have stopped taking money for products that they cant pinpoint when they are coming in.

Its to stop bad press on there behalf for taking payment for something they dont have and making the customer wait a month or more.

As said earlier I could put anyone wanting a 5870 to 9 in stock at £383

My problem is I have a brand new build waiting for a 5870 and no other card to keep me going. Not sure what to do as there aren't any alternatives.
