5800 vs 5900 temps

I hear a lot of complaints about 5800 temps but not so many about 5900 temps.

Is this because the 5900 is a better binned chip or just that it’s owners generally run between cooling?

It's because the cores are split across 2 separate chiplets in the 5900x (2 x 7nm chiplets with 6 of 8 cores active in each), so heat is dissipated over a larger surface area, whereas a 5800x has just a single 7nm chiplet with all 8 cores active, which makes getting all that heat into the heatspreader very difficult.

Ha! That's one way of justifying a 5900x over 5800x, although it is one expensive justification lol.

Unless you really need 12 cores then the 5800x will be fine with a decent air or aio cooler.

It's because of three reasons:

With 12 cores sharing same TDP limit, they have lower TDP per core and heat density under multithreaded loads.

That also means cores must have higher quality to run fast with less power.
With 5800X's lots of TDP per core they can just crank up the volts to compensate for lower quality silicon.

And with two chiplets there's lot bigger area for conducting heat into heatspreader.
Monocrystalline silicon also has near aluminium level thermal conductivity enabling use of area of disabled cores to spread heat.

None of that

Its because the 105w tdp is split between two ccx dies while the 5800x only has one

Brazo, Just to make you aware there, out in the wild 5600x (6c/12)t & 5800x(8c16t) that have two chiplets. They are failed 5950x and 5900x, with one being disabled. These also will be cooler than normal 5600x & 5800x
