Looking to get build together again I usually keep pcs for 6 months get bored and sell. Instead of forking out over £4k a time (last system was a 7950x3d and a 4090) and selling for next to nothing looking to be abit smarter this time. I'll game at 1440p I have a 32GP850 I usually run games at lower details cod,apex,cs2 not very often ill run max settings at all.

I have found a pc locally for around £1300 has a 5800x3d 32gb ddr4 7800xt sapphire. all branded no skimping on anything cheap. Is this rig worth the price?

I would say no, the discount on a used PC is too small, even if I include a full price OS.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,411.85 (includes delivery: £11.98)

You're also not that far from a 7800X3D+7900 GRE build.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,606.78 (includes delivery: £11.98)

Cooler: peerless assassin or phantom spirit (~£35).

Is the 5800x3d 7800xt still a good spec ?

If you want an affordable, but upgradeable 1440p PC, then for CPU I'd get a 7500F/7600 and a reasonable B650 board, which is NOT one of these:

With the 7800 XT, it has been largely replaced in the market by the 7900 GRE, but that was when they were priced very closely. I'd say the Pulse 7800 XT OCUK have @ £450 is a better deal.

M-ATX variant of the above:

Make sure the GPU fits that case if you go for it, one or two pre-order items but it could be worth seeing if OCUK can give an estimate given the value proposition.

I'd either buy a cheap Windows key for £5-10 or run without, you can go keyless but you lose one or two minor features and have to put up with a watermark, Windows is not worth £100 out of your budget imo.

To be honest Im not fussed about the cost don't get me wrong I can go all out again but trying to be smarter if I don't keep it that long again. I also been looking at a 14700k and 4070 do fancy trying intel

If you only keep it for 6 months, then I expect you'll lose more the higher premium you pay.

The best value Intel option right now is the 12600KF and if you like the 5800X3D, the 5700X3D is much less and performs very similar.

I don't think it is worth buying the 14700K and getting 8 P-Cores when you already know that you're not going to benefit long-term.

Yeah that's why Im trying to be smarter this time around get something half decent for a lot less of a hit when I get rid. Just out of interest how does say a 14700k 4070 super stack up in price compared to the 7800x3d build above with the 7800xt ?

I don't need the windows key got w11 linked on my email I think

Depends on the motherboard and which model of the 4070 Super you buy, but I'd expect around £100-£150 extra on the £450 7800 XT and somewhere between £50-£150 on the 7800X3D & motherboard. Note that the KF is usually £20-£40 cheaper than the K. The 14600KF is much cheaper, so I'd normally suggest that instead, but a lot of the more affordable boards lack flashback which can lead to the overall build cost being pretty high on the board anyway.

next time you feel the urge to splurge £4k on a gaming rig, and 6 months later want to sell for next to nothing, may I please raise my hand to be 1st in line.. Just putting it out there:cry::cry:

I'd go something like below with an air cooler. I'm plumbing for the XT view case as the fishbowl look is popular(have a 011d), but I'm not so keen on the width and phantex's have kindly put the psu at the bottom so get the thinness of a standard case with the open look. chucked a 4070super in there also rather than the 7900gre, as I'd want dlss and hopefully the raytracing is actually useable...nvidia go for more 2nd hand also so maybe it might hold up better than the gre there too. 5yrs warranty should help too.
think 7600 better than am4 5800x3d/5700x3d...on average they're fairly on a par, though for the gsames that love x3d, then the am4 will win...but am4 getting older by the day, whereas 6 months down the line, the am5 will be relevant and anyone buying it will still have an upgrade path..think that'll make it more appealing for selling on....that just me as if I was looking 2nd hand and had to choose between the am4 and am5, I'd go am5 every time...7600 would do then hopefully drop a 9800x3d in there in a year or 2's time
