5800X3D or 5900X?

One thing worth checking is these need a cooler where the contact plate can be slightly offset. So the hottest part is not bang in the middle its slightly down if I remember due to the architecture. eg the Arctic Cooling AIO's have a notch on the bracket for this CPU think its similiar with other 5xxx chips but not all coolers accomodate this. Can make a 5-8c difference or more.

Also look into using the PBO2 app to run it cooler. Check the main 5800x3d thread its mentioned in there.

I'm currently debating with myself to swap to a 5800X3D. I already own a 5800X alongside a 3080FE playing at 1440P. Just a bit unsure if the gains are worth the additional cost. Graned this would be my last upgrade until nearer the end of AM5 but would likely have a GPU upgrade in that time so the 5800X3D may fair better that way.

Is there any article anywhere online where I can read up on this?

I swapped to the 5800X3D from the 5800X. Games are the biggest difference. It also runs slightly cooler at stock settings. I think what swung it for me was the many comments about this should last another 2-3 generations and still perform well. The 7700X3D or whatever will probably beat it if one ever comes out but then you still need to get DDR5, AM5 motherboard I think mine will be kept to at least the 9xxx series when it will probably be my time for an upgrade. I had the 8700k CPU before it so I tend to go at least 2-3 generations behind before an upgrade.

I ended up ordering an arctic freezer 240mm there, be quiet shadow rock 3 would have done the job but the coolers are incredible pita to install so couldn't be assed going the faff again

Bah, my Lian-Li Galahad can't do that as it just clips on the pre-installed brackets for AMD coolers. On the other hand it tops out at or just below 70°c with -30 all core on PBO2 Tuner. I've heard the offset does make a big difference for AIO's that support it however.

You know, the flip side of the Galahad is how damned easy it is to install, no bracket at all. After having a Corsair AIO and Archon SB-X2 tower cooler (which was superb BTW) it's such a relief!

Hey, thanks for your input. I'll perhaps go ask some questions on the 5800X3d thread. I'm certainly interested. I'm also swithering if I should wait to see if any black Friday deals.
