5820K Keeps dying, now on number 3 within 9 months

Just putting the feelers out to find out how other users are getting on in terms of life, I am now on my third 5820K which just randomly dies. Usually after a restart the PC does not turn on and gets stuck initializing DXE on boot. Usually Boot Error Code 60 or 63.


I am using a Rampage V, water cooled with an original Titan and a second ATI card for extra monitors. Overcocked the first to 4.6 weith no issues at about 1.3v and then the second chip at 4.5 for 1.28v

Have any one else had issues with a bad batch or bad experiences of CPU life etc?
 
Did you have an overclock when these error messages show up? Sounds like your overclock is not possibly fully stable if that was the case. 3 CPU's dying sounds very odd tbh.
 
If you're not setting all of the voltages manually it might be that the motherboard is automatically increasing System Agent or IMC voltage or something and that is killing the processor.

Strange. I've been fine for over a year on a 5820K watercooled with a 4.5 overclock at 1.28 volts.

1.31 should be fine although I know that is closer to the acceptable ceiling for a 24/7 clock. As others have said, is there something up with the board?
 
Bios updated?

I know the RVE has a tendancy to throw 1.8v into the CPU on startup with older bios. Has done it with mine once.

Other than that CPU's are bulletproof. You must be doing something wrong to kill 3 of them.

Your not using conductive paste or anything? Not overheating?
 
If ya havent already, wipe your bios and reflash, i found my mobo was randomly setting my vcore to 1.5+ volts recently, you might be getting the same thing. I havent had it happen again since i reflashed so it might be worth ya doing the same.
 
Defo the board, i had this with RVE and a 5960 and fortunately the cpu was under phase so around -56c and no harm was done when i noticed the high voltage that I had not set. Update your bios then monitor voltage in bios then in windows.

Just for a bit of info this is not my first build I have used a 2700k at 4.5 in a danger den torture rack rock solid for 4+ years without a hiccup, just wanted to upgrade to 6 cores and DDR4

New PC is EVGA 1600 gold PSU open air banchetto case, Corsair 3000 32GB of ram and obviously 5820k on a rampage V extreme with monoblock installed, EK triple radiator, EK waterblock on the Titan and a 200ml reservoir

Temperature is usually around the 40s and never goes over 55 mainly used for lots of virtual machines and powers 6 24" monitors for work.

With regards to the motherboard pins and paste I have no idea as it was bought with the monoblock fitted from over lockers and I have had to send the whole thing back each time so I've never took the monoblock of the motherboard at any point

The motherboard is still the original as I bought it from overclockers and the cpu has been replaced each time I was just trying to see if anyone else had similar issues as my 2700k is an absolute rock and has never failed or crashed on me. With the 5820k everything is fine and then all of a sudden after a few months it will BSOD once or twice in a week and then not turn back on. I have always used the latest bios on the RVE and check regularly for updates

Because of this issue I'm now thinking whether to sell the replacement chip when I get it and upgrade to a 6800k?? What are people's thoughts on that??

When I'm near my laptop tomorrow I'll post my overclock settings in case someone can easily see what I'm doing wrong

5820k's are generally supposed to be good clockers right now, so likely a good reason to hang onto the replacement as already mentioned.
 
Turns out I am going to be receiving a replacement motherboard and chip this time round.
So hopefully I should be sorted.

Just in case anyone can spot something obvious here are the overclock settings I last used, the first chip was slightly higher at 4.6 but this is what the last chip failed on after about 3 month

XMP and the 1.25 strap are probably ramping up a few of the voltages which are still set to auto (ie. System Agent or Cache/IMC voltage). I would avoid using both of them personally.

The 5820K only officially supports 2133mhz memory so running 3000mhz is a significant overclock for the CPU's memory controller, there's no reason to use the strap on an unlocked chip either just use the multiplier.

Would you not bother with XMP at all then?

I thought I was onto a winner as I got the 3000Mhz Corsair RAM at a bargain but my last PC was Sandybridge so there are quite a few things that has changed since then
 
It's safer to set the voltages manually in my view and not go too much over stock settings, if you can't get your memory to run at 3000mhz with moderate voltage increases then it's better to run it at 2400-2666mhz with tighter timings and safer voltages instead.

Memory manufacturers are selling 3000mhz memory and motherboard manufacturers are selling compatible motherboards but the processors do not officially support it.
