5820K Keeps dying, now on number 3 within 9 months

Even if you want to run high frequencies you're better doing it yourself than using XMP in general - and as others have said, Auto volts can be way too high (especially on ASUS boards it seems) in some scenarios.

I've noticed that too, Asus boards as well. Never, ever let the BIOS set the voltage especially if overclocking. Even at stock it tends to be set high the i7 920 I once had it tried to set it to 1.3V or thereabouts even at stock, whereas it was perfectly stable at 0.97V manually set and a heck of a lot cooler.
 
Auto voltage if your overclocking is bad. E.g. If I use auto on my 2600k at 4.4ghz it tries to use almost 1.5v! which will obviously kill the chip.

Still a little confused though, I set the voltage to 1.3 and I'm not sure what else to change. Previously I change vcore and then if it has no effect then start looking at changing the others. Again the last thing i overclocked was a 2700k and that was dead easy.
I've just been looking at the rog guide and it says set to 1.3 and then work down as required etc etc. But leave everything else on auto, I'm now. Just a bit confused and also very scared that anything I do is going to kill another chip or board and I only have a few more months of warranty left
 
Just changing the strap to 1.25 or enabling XMP has a knock on effect with the board increasing other voltages (system agent/IMC etc).

You don't need to use the strap on unlocked CPU's and XMP (stands for "eXtreme Memory Profile") usually runs CPU outside it's official specification.
 
I concur, auto voltage tuning tends to be way more than needed.

on my haswell if I left on auto the bios would be giving my chip 1.325v, yet I run it fine on 1.15v, a pretty big difference.

I usually enable XMP, reboot, go back into bios, I check all timings compared to manufacturer listed timings, and manually adjust any that are off, I also check all voltages and any that look too high I will manually set. This includes the IMC.

You will also get more life if you correctly use adaptive offset mode instead of a set voltage 24/7. e.g. my cpu still drops to a very low voltage when idle.
