5820K price drop when Skylakes appear?

it would be silly not to price drop old stock surely otherwise they run the risk of not selling it and maybe having to bin it later.

Never havens. There are always people willing to pay the price so they are stuck with stock. Even worse it can then sometimes go up.

5820k are cheap for 6 core. They won't drop in price anyway until a new 6 core comes out to replace them and they will just go eol.

He'll look at socket 1366 motherboards. Been end of line for ages. I busted my board and looked at replacing it like for like. Only new stock was £465 :o even looking at alternative brands and models were all all between £200 and £300. I only paid £95 for it when it was brand new! Hence I bought a s99 board for £130 and a 5820 for £290 and ram for £119. Total cost £540 less £100 for my old ram and cpu. Shame board didn't still work as would have got £150 for that.

So a follow up question is if there are no price drops but they go EOL do they manage to selloff the whole lot at full price when newer gen products are out at same price?

Basically yes if new gen products need a different motherboard and or ram.

Image the gfx market if every new card needed a new slot? Nvidea might release their new card on a different slot and be 20% faster at same price as their old flagship card. Do they need to drop the price of the old one? No. There is a big enough market for those not prepared to grade their whole system to keep buying the old flagship card at full price.

So next gen cpu will only drop the price of the old gen if on the same socket.

Well, Skylake has appeared and the price of the 5820K has dropped a couple of quid (deal of the week). Should I grab the 5820K now or do you think, contrary to initial predictions, it might get cheaper still?
Thanks

I'm tempted by one of the 5820k bundles. But will even those be a noticable improvement from a 2600k @ 4.6ghz?

I don't think they will get much cheaper, they will just run out and you don't be able to find any :)

Bit of a thread revivial, but what kind over overclocks can I expect with a 5820K on air with say a Noctua NH-U14S?
