Hi All

I have a trusty 5850 that has developed a case of "stop being such a noisy git"

I wont be upgrading or replacing it, so i would like to look at maybe replacing the cooler

I cant really justify forking out a huge amount of money, so the AC Accelero Twin Turbo is looking good

I cant find one on the OCUK site, but have any of you any experience with the above, ideally with a 5850, or 5870

Hi Jerry

Mine has just suddenly decided that when running at load to run the fans very very loud. Playing MW3 at the weekend, my wife had to say it to me that she was wondering what was wrong. It used to be so quiet, but now its gone mad! Gonna check out a few things first, a good case cleanout and the like (i have an Antec P180) and go from there, but i appreciate the thread

I'd try while your cleaning all the dust out replacing the Thermal compound aswell , i Know when i redid my 5870's most of the old pads on it had started to crumble apart and clean plus new TIM dropped temps about 20c

hmmm, thats a good idea too. I must reserve a few hours for myself. On a side note, does any of you guys have any youtube or instruction vids on taking the 5850 appart or the like? Also, a list of materials i will need

For the fan re-lube job, what should i get?

For thermal gease, i think i have loads about and in work and the like

Is there anything i should be looking at getting extra?

Well my 5870 was a reference blower one,, small phillips screwdriver iirc and your all set
Remove all the screws from the backplate and from the output shield and it just came apart with a little pressure. Take card out dissemble replace tim reassemble put back in pc took me about say 30mins tops counting a cuppa in the middle :)
Cant help with the fans as i didn't take those apart
Check your fan percentages before you take it apart they might simply be at 80%+ if its dirty at which point they will become noisy regardless if there in new condition or buggered you may not need to touch them

I have done the 5850 fan repair,
sorry the video is not very clear, but I still found it useful. You can see around 1:50 it needs a fair bit of force to prise the fan apart, then use sewing machine oil on the sleeve bearing.

I had the same issue with an old 5870. I bought a Gelid Icy Vision Rev 2.

Worth a look at around £30.00, though you would probably be better off cleaning it up, selling it for about £40.00 and putting that, and the £30.00 towards a second hand 6950 / 6970 which go for about £70.00.

Hi All

I couldnt find any sewing machine oil

Could anyone give me a make or brand of lubricant i can use? Im in Ireland, so going into like a motor factors is fraught with "you want to do what?"

If anyone has a link to something online, thank you

PapaLazaru: Thanks, but i dont think i will be upgrading this machine any further. All spare cash is going into a new baby right now! And after that, i'll be building a new smaller system, mini ITX based i suspect
