5850 Boot issue

Good evening, knowledgeable ladies & gentlemen (and miscellaneous other) of the forum.

My shiny new Saphhire HD5850 turned up today, which is great, but I can't quite seem to get it to work, which is not so great.

Before I RMA it I thought I'd ask you graphics worldly people if you can see if there is anything I've missed before I embarrass myself with returning a working card.

Brief PC specs:
PSU: Corsair TX650W
MB: Asus P5N-E SLI (Bios v1301)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo ([email protected])
Mem: 4GB

Problem description:
No POST. No beeps. Power is running through everything (lights on cards & MB light up as expected), all fans kick into life. But no sound and no output.

I still have my old 8800GTS which despite starting to fail (weird artefacts and lines) will allow my system to boot up when it is switched back in.

I have unplugged all extraneous powered devices within the case (such as hard drives, cd drives, extra case fans) just to eliminate them. I have also ensured that both 6pin power plugs are connected to the HD5850 card. The card is in the primary (x16) slot.

Am I missing something obvious here? Is there a known issue with this motherboard and recent graphics cards? etc

Thanks for your time in reading this, hope you can help.

Edit note:
OC have finished testing my card and it seems fine.
This seems to confirm that the Asus p5n-e board has some serious issues with the 5850.
Worryingly there seems to be a fair few ppl with problems with the 5870 5850 especially booting up with no display problems.
i recently had to send back a 5870 as i had a problem when booting up with no display,i wonder why a lot ppl are having these issues very odd?.

Hiya, I'm having a very similar issue with my Gigabyte 5850 + P5N-E SLI.

No picture, fan @ 100%, but it does post, windows even loads up (I can hear the startup sound through my speakers). This happens about 9 out of 10 attempts, but once it's on, it's on for as long as I don't power the system down, even resetting is fine (even survived a BIOS upgrade). Once I press the power button and fan starts normally, I know I'm good to go.

It's actually not too big an issue for me, as I have my PC on 24/07, and it's something I can live with until the inevitable i(5/7) upgrade :D

I honestly think the cards are fine, and it's the board that's the issue.

Regards

I had this exact problem on my 5850 with asus, p5q in my case, mobo.. It was wierd as for the first week I had it there were no problems, then after that it was normal to switch on the computer and the G/card fan was @100%, leave for 10 seconds turn off(fun power down) then hit start again - pc would boot normally for the rest of the day with zero instability.

I tried reseating the card, resetting the bios, tweaking various settings and nothing worked. Then after another week of not starting on first boot it went back to being ok, after a fews days with no boot issues I re-did my overclock and it's still fine for the last 5/6 days. All in all a very strange issue with these cards and Asus mobo's.

i have the same board but not a 5800series card, if you look in the forums support on asus site people have this issue, wait one min for it to post you may get a display, then report back.

I did, for much longer than a minute (I used a stopwatch), numerous times. :(

On a separate note, whilst saving up for a i5 upgrade in a couple of months (i.e. after Christmas most likely), does anyone know if these boards work with the 5850? Or can suggest another Socket 775 that has 4 RAM slots. I don't want to go nuts on cost as I'm not planning on using it long term.

Gigabyte GA-EP31-DS3L
Gigabyte GA-EG41MF-US2H

Cheers.

I have the same issue it will start if i try a few times then its fine once up and running. I have a Gigabyte 5850 and a gigabyte 770 MB. seems this is an issue with the graphics card not the MB.

Had mine for a few days shy of a month now its even been running a 5870 bios on for 3 weeks i put on by mistake and its never missed a beat, not had one boot up problem of any sort yet, mines running on a GA-P35 DSL, one thing i have noticed though lots seem to have issues with Asus motherboards.

Maybe its nothing wrong with the cards and these board manufactures need to pull there fingers out and get proper support added in bios upgrades.

I m having the same problem with 5770 and with a new MSI P55 65 mobo. Have been searching around the Internet, seem quite a few people are having this problem with theses GPU. Please post few you find solution.

I have the same mobo sa llewellyn and a 5850. Exact problems as he describes it. 100% fan, no post, error code of 1 long and 3 short beeps. Upgrading from a gtx275 so there shouldn't be any problems. Updated bios to 1046 which asus claims should address ati gpu issues.

Has anyone solved this cold boot problem?

I tested the 5850 in a friend's computer today and it worked perfectly. The funny thing is that he has an older asus mobo than me, the P5KPL VM. I am convinced this is an issue specific to certain mobos, like my P5NE SLI. :(
