A week ago my 5850 started making a very wierd noice the fan started to sound very noisy anad heavy.

At the time I thought it was one of my case fan that had become faulty. It happened this mornig and I could hear the 5850 fan wa the problem.

I went into the CCC and turned the fan al the way down and it got a lot louder so I determined the fan was the problem.

It only happens occasionally usualy when I watch vides and stuff, but I cannot stp the noise without turned my pc off andsometimes that does not even work.

I have googled this and it seems to be an ssue with the 5850's fan.

So is it RMA time?

How long does the return of the card usually take?

Also is it possible that you pay the difference and upgrade to a bettercard ie the 5870?

It is an issue with the 5850's but it was a lot of the 5850 cards that where sold by Sapphire, just like yours. Upgrading your card to an 5870 isn't really an upgrade as the 5850 can oc at the same/past 5870 speeds.

Take the card out of the system and give it a good blow :)

This seems to be an issue with some 5850s like you've found out.

The issue itself isn't something that's detrimental to the card's longevity, however it's obviously incredibly annoying.

The turn around for an RMA should be pretty quick, alternatively you could take a bit of sand paper to the fin on the fan that's causing the problem if you don't want to return it.

A 5870 really isn't worth the price difference over the 5850 though. It's an extra £80 or so for "more" performance, but you can overclock all 5850s to 5870 speeds and the performance is identical.

I really don't want to mess with card myself I woud rathe RMA it...

Would I have to contact Overclockers to do the RMA as I could not find anything of the Sapphire site that suggested otherwise?

Like you guys said the 5870 is not really a good upgrade option so d you think it's woth getting a toxic 2GB 5850 or 5870 or shall I just stick to what I have?

Depending what rez you play on, you won't notice a difference as the extra ram on the gpu only helps at very high rez.... 1920 x 1200+

I contacted OC and did get a reply asking what kind of noise it was and how loud it was, this was a week ago have not heard anything else since
