5850 grinding fan

Well, that was a very poor recording, I can hear the problem but I doubt most people would ! I have had them Much worse than that after I modified some special 3850 coolers to fit 4850's and to clear Caps etc I machined away some of the supporting base plate.

You can heat the fan with a heat gun and "true it up" but it may not work for long if the card gets hot and the Fan relaxes back to its original shape
or You could cut some of the top surround away so the fan can not touch it
Third option is to shim the fan with a thin washer so it cannot lift as high as the surround

The basic problem is the Fan is buckled (as most slightly are) Yours has just run out of clearance tolerances Fan-bearing-mount-cowling

You have more than enough reason to demand a new card, but If You are happy with it it might be worth fixing it, I doubt You have the tools to trim and rebalance the Fan so I would cut the Cowl aperture to the fans diameter, that will not require as much precision ;)

Oh come on, anyone with ears will know that a computer fan shouldn't sound like that.

As well as being extremely loud, louder than my whole PC in fact, and my PC isn't anywhere near quiet, the grind is obviously a fault too.

Does the fan have a lot of play in it when you press on it ?

Suggest you ring them again and quote sale of goods act. Also hold the phone near the fan if you can and ask them if they can hear the issue ! :)

In my original webnotes to them I gave them a link to the mp3. The support chap I spoke to today hadn't listened to it which surprised me as I also sent the link in the covering letter that went back with the card. If it's grinding one minute and not the next when running at the same speed (general use/21% automatic fan) then to me that's an intermittent fault with the fan. I do have 2 decades worth of pc support with a global corporation under my belt and do this sort of support everyday. A few years ago I sent back an ICEQ3 card that had started to do the same thing and it was replaced.

Great GPU, dodgy fan unfortunately.
