5850 issue

Mother board - Abit Il9 Pro with latest BIOS
PSU - OCZ 700W gaming (not sure on exact name but is SLI)
G-card - Sapphire 5850

Problem
The graphics card only works in the second (X4) PCIE slot on the motherboard, if I put it in the first (X16) slot it does not boot past POST (no sound) and have a blank screen.

Tried
Motherboard has the latest BIOS
Reseting the CMOS
Put it another machine but also had a blank screen
Left it in the first PCIE slot for a few minutes but still had a blank screen

Any thoughts?

I have 4 * 2GB corsair sticks, this morning I tried taking 3 out, then tried it with 1 in 2 different slots but no luck

I would try changing the pci-e frequency from auto but i am not sure what you would put it on this card

Had a look in the BIOS last night, the only option for the PCIE frequency was enable/disable auto detect, unless I have missed anything.

The only other thing I think off is that the motherboard is crossfire but I've read about something called a switch card but I don't have one.

just had a word with tech support ppl and advised me it might be to do with an incompatability with the PCIE1 board and PCIE2 card, not sure off hand.

Also removed the PCIE aux power supply but this also did not work
