Hi there lads, I got my brand new Sapphire 5850 from OcUk, about possibly 2 days ago right.

I dont know much about overclocking or any of that stuff, I just use my computers for gaming, mostly Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare (as I go to lans/tournaments, and make a bit of money from playing the game) I got this Graphics card because the ideal fps that cod4 should be ran at is 250fps constant. I play at 1650x1050 resoloution on a 22' screen.

I tested out Dirt 2 and cod 4 and crysis etc. etc. Strange thing is, this card is not performing as i thought it should to be quite honest. Im a bit weary that it might be bottlenecking. My freind told me that I need to get a new cpu / motherboard and new ram to run that bad boy at its best, let alone 2 of the 5850's. (Not, I will be ordering a second 5850 on Jan 14th).

System Specs :
Q6600 @ 2.4 Stock (i dont know how to overclock :()
P5N-E Sli motherboard, nForce 650i chipset
4Gb of DDR2 Ram at 333.3 Mhz (thats what CPU-Z says anyways)
Corsair 850W Power supply
Corsair H50 Cooler thingy
2 Hard drives
Windows 7

Now could anyone here please give me some advice on what to do, mind you money isnt an issue. Although it would be nice to save some money if i have to upgrade...well i might aswell upgrade to the best. Also remember I only got a Corsair 850W power supply, so will crossfire and any of the new things+overclocked still run on this power supply, was going to get the 1000W but was told it was way overkill.

just over clock to 3.4 and get better ram as 666mhz for ram is slow you will want to get atleast 1066.

anythng more than just doing that would be a lot of money and for little improvement

your friend is right. your machine is bottlenecking your card.

your cpu should be at least 3.4ghz and i'd change your ram to some 1066mhz stuff. as for the 333.3 in cpu-z you need to double this and it'll give you your ram speed. 333.3 x 2 = 666.6 (667mhz).

trouble is i doubt your motherboard would cope (i could be wrong) so an update of this would be required too.

edit: beaten to it :)

As above read the overclock stickys your cpu should be able to hit 3ghz min and 3.6+ghz if its a good chip and you have good cooling. Again memory would be a good idea as markiejt said

Edit: get a corsair H50 and Asus p5q pro turbo £140 approx and you should be rockin

Thanks lads, I was told that my motherboard as you said will not be able to cope even 3.0 ghz let alone 3.4, as for the ram shouldnt i just buy some better ddr3 ram if im going to buy some new ram anyways?

You're not going to get a decent overclock with that board. The 650i chipset is pretty pants tbh.

You also won't be able to add a second 5850, because nForce chipsets won't do CrossFire. It would be a waste of money anyway at 1680x1050 for the most part.

Your PSU is absolutely fine; you have oodles of power.

Will depend of the mother board you buy i would keep it a cheap upgrade otherwise you might as well gone all out a built a new i5/i7 rig. I would say ddr3 not really needed for your case

Get a good p45 chip mobo
good cooler True/Meg/h50
ddr2 1066 ram Should be able to the lot for £200

So if it were you guys, would you buy a new motherboard / ram and overclock the q6600 crazy? Or buy new motherboard / ram and a new cpu so you can use ddr3 instead of ddr2?

Also any ideas of how much i can overclock the 6600 atm in my current motherboard?

edit : got beaten to it :P

I think i have a good cooler mate? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=WC-002-CS&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=1395

So new motherboard / ram and bang it all together aye? Will the new motherboard allow me to fit another 5850 possibly?

New mobo tbh. DDR3 is only necessary if you're on a DDR3-only platform e.g. i5/i7. You might be able to reach 2.8ghz or so but it isn't going to go far.

There is absolutely no point on buying a second 5850 yet.
And as you say:

mind you money isnt an issue.

I would suggest a system overhaul as it would come out costing near that of a 5850.

That motherboard + RAM combo isnt going to overclock far, and if your replacing it you might aswell upgrade while you can still get some cash for the Q6600.

Suggestion to follow. ;)

You can do an i5 750, Asus mobo, 4GB GSkill RAM and a cooler for £330 or so. Would be an excellent upgrade.

I was shocked when I saw the title.. :p
Yeah as everyon has said, you need a good balanced system that's all.
