Either i'm doing something wrong or I had unreal expectations.

Just installed my ASUS 5850 and at stock settings its slower than my old set up of 2x8800GT in SLI.

I know 3Dmark06 is a synthetic benchmark, but i'm using it to compare for which purpose it's fine.

old setup scored approx 22800s
new setup scored approx 20500s

could be driver I guess or how i have resolutions and scalings set up as i'm not overly familiar with the catalyst thing yet.

Any help/advice to make me feel better about this much appreciated

What i'm trying to say is that with everything else the same (CPU,RAM etc) the card is slower. Surely even if it's a "poop" benchmark it is still capable of comparing 2 setups

Play a recent game in a decent resolution. Afaik the 5850 will only get into it's stride when the resolution is cranked up. It will be quicker than those 512mb 8800s

3DMark06 is no longer a valid benchmark. 2006 was a long time ago for the graphics industry and even Vantage is lagging a bit now.

Just down clocked my 5870 to 725 core 1000 mem, ran 06 and score below, i7 has HT enabled. I think your score is a bit low if your CPU is at the speed it says in your sig.

5850 is a beast even at stock clocks. As others have said, ditch 3d06 and use vantage and see those 8800s in sli lag far behind.

My scores are
old set up
sim2 8607
HDR 10486
CPU 7405
3Dmark 22875
Not that far off the 5870!!!

New Set up
sim2 7192
HDR 9736
CPU 7243
3Dmark 20637

never really been sure what the first 2 sets of numbers are, but they're clearly higher than present.

Where am I going wrong guys???

thanks for your input.

I know it's not great, but it's the only way I can compare as my old setup was benched on it.

your new card is slower simple as.

compare the detailed benchmark results, if you used the same cpu speed then your cpu score would be the same and the graphics score would be the only one that changes during this test with different video cards.

if your gfx score is lower with the new card then the new card is slower compared to your older setup.

if however the gfx score is higher then your old setup but the cpu score is lower then its a cpu problem your having.

regardless of a benchmarks age all it does is run its code and then see how long it takes the hardware to finish. lower score compared to pervious score means a slower system. (take into account that there is some variance between repeated tests etc)

so what you guys are saying is that the new card he has should be good for playing newer games, but any of his older games will run slower compared to his old setup??

you guys sure about that?

Play a game. Who cares about benchmarks. Fire up Crysis and see how it feels compare to your previous setup. The problem is marketing and the hysteria some people get caught up in when new cards get released. I remember seeing interviews with MS and their HLSL guys just before DX10 hit and they said gaming up to 6x faster will be common place. Well, that never happened and it's not quite happening with DX11 either (yet).

The 5850 should pull equal or past your GT's but it won't blow it of the face of the earth. I mean, just look in this thread. You have people saying it should be faster and then you have someone saying it will be slower. Point is, we can give our opinions and in the end it means nothing. Too many factors come into play in a PC. Nobody will ever get the exact performance than others with roughly similar setups.

Again, play a game. You didn't buy it to run 4 year old meaningless benchmarks did you?

If I am not mistaken, the 8800GT was one of the first cards to be able to really run Crysis well. 2 of them in SLI mode just might be able to squeak out a win from a single 5850. The 8800GT was a beast of a card, and still is in some ways.
