MSI GTX460 1GB

prices range from £190-£215

Any opinions are helpful, thanks

I could but it really would be a push and after hearing about the issues with the cards noise and heat i dont think i would go for it

^ issues? noise isn't as bad as people say and neither is heat (heat doesn't matter any way, the GPU's can take enough heat to the point you could boil an egg on it, not that it would be stable at that temp as if you got there you'd have to be running it with no cooler)

Asus 5850
  • More powerful
  • 3 year warranty show more confidence in product
  • Uses less power
  • Overclocks better
  • No hassle with drivers form current ATI card

Are any of the current 5850's able to have the volt mod done?
Been having a read up over the last few days and it seems like this option died with the original reference board designs.

Problem is if I end up spending the £255 or £270 on the asus its almost worth spending the little extra and getting 2 x 768m GTX460 and running sli.
Obviously a new build is in the making here as current setup is getting rather long in the tooth now.

Asus 5850 can be had for less than £220 delivered elsewhere. I think it's £210 for the product only. You haven't got a free delivery here anyway.

I will only be running whatever I get in 1680 x 1050 so will the extra ram make all that difference? Although the extra paths might I guess.
With the 5850 I was going to o/c the nuts off it on water so the volt mod able one would have been the one to go for.
Trying to Find out what blocks I can get on the 460 ATM.

If you're going to watercool then have a thought about GeForce 470, it can be had for £235 here. Otherwise go for 5850, it can clock to 1000/1300 core/memory on water.

But would that be a reference design board and will it need volting or bios flashing? Non of which I am scared of BTW. lol.
If i go down the 5850 route was thinking full cover block, probably the EK nickle job.

It depends on the price but the Asus voltage tweak HD5850 is by far the best IMO.

You should have little trouble seeing GTX480/HD5870 type performance.

I'd probably get the cheapest reference card there is, flash it with Asus bios and overclock the nutz of it tbh :D

How's the 460 better bang for buck? It's like saying that Radeon 5770 is the better of the three because it costs a lot less and doesn't lose that much of the performance.

@ 1920 x 1200, the 1GB 460 averages 44fps across AvP2, Dirt2, BF and Metro. At £180, this gives 0.25fps/£

the 5850 averages 47fps. At £200, this gives 0.23fps/£

I don't know about you, but to me that means the 1GB 460 gives better bang for buck.
