5850 or 6970

Black Ops punished your machine? I think you are getting confused because of the lag that everyone had on release date, which has since been patched. Black Ops is a console port and has very low system requirements...

Allot of us are still getting lag.

the 6000 is Northern Island version and next one is the Southern Island with new HD 7000 due in H2 2011 so I will wait for the new HD7000 with new 28nm and extra improvement that would be good one..

I look at 6000 but decided to wait for the 7000 that will come out in 6 months time.

28nm will be longer than six months, and the first cards on that process will be the lower performance models to enable them to work out the kinks.

I love my 5850 and really dont see the point of upgrading to a 6970. Although it has a higher default clock speed and twice the memory im not to sure how good they can really clock to. I have my 5850 at 800/1100 at stock voltage at the mo and i know i could give it more but im just a little wary to how much voltage i can pump through the card  I can run games like gta 4 really well with the odd little slow down but thats just gta being a bad port i think. Still running 10.3 drivers and wont change a thing while everything seems to be running ok

I so nearly ordered one to replace my 4870x2 but dont think I will bother was waiting for the 69xx series and they are not as good as I was expecting.
I know they will be faster but not that much faster to warrent £280 or there abouts.

I have had my 5850 with 980 on the core and the memory maxed on the msi after burner since November 2009 (so totally stable) :D

... still want a 580 though :o

I have been able to overclock my sapphire 5850 to 900/1200MHz on stock voltage:). I went up to 930MHz on core but furmark would crash. As it is a non-reference PCB, I don't have the option of tweaking the voltage.

5850 is a beautiful card :).

But the 6970 is better! My 5850 was my first ever card that i had chosen myself and i was flabbergasted by it. the 6970 is even better and it is a LOT smoother and i get higher FPS

No - accord to AMD that it will be release in H2 2011 for the new Southern Island HD7000 so it may come out between April to June but think it would be likely between July/August... I would wait for it and save some money to buy one..

AMD historically release their cards in the winter, so expect new cards around October next year.

This, don't expect to see the "7970" or whatever before early 2012, if not later. That will be my next upgrade, my 5850 will be fine until then.

The main thing i noticed about the 6970 was just how smooth game run on it, Even at the same frame rates as my old card!.

Just wish it was abit faster but you can tell they are early drivers so just wait till we get better drivers :)
