5850 overclocking problem

Are you trying to overclock more than 775mhz?
Like you when I try with MSI to o/c over this, it reverts back to stock.
I believe there is a way to unlock Afterburner, I was just about to look for it in the forum when I saw your post.

Did you manage to sort your problem out?
I couldn't find the post for unlocking Afterburner, but with a little tinkering have managed to do it. Quite an achievment for me!!
5870 speeds coming right up!

installed it turned opened msi 1.5 tried to overclock it and it wont let me when i press apply it just reverts to stock it will let me adjust the fan speed and the voltage though they arnt greyed out either any suggestions?

Go into msi aftrerburn folder in programs, open up the config folder with note pad,
change UnofficialOverclocking from "0" to "1
Then go to file...save as, then save it to the same folder over writing the config folder.
Do this at your own risk....worked for me though.

Hmm having the same issue - cannot overclock the card

I don't have a folder called config and that setting (UnofficialOverclocking) does not exist anywhere in the MSI afterburner directory

I found it by right clicking on the MSI Afterburner shortcut and then clicking on Open File Location.
Then you should see a bunch of files and stuff, look for MSIAfterburner - CFG file and open it with notepad.
For some reason I could only alter it by copying it to desktop, changing the setting, saving then copying back to the MSI folder.

I have the same card (5850 XXX) and thinkning about OC it past CCC 775/1125.

Reading the posts above it looks like I have to download MSI afterburner and alter one setting (EnableUnofficialOverclocking= from 0 to 1). Do I have to flash the BIOS too? and does it void my warranty?

You don't need to flash the Bios, just use Afterburner, i got my Hd 5850 at 800/1150 plays brill.

So It won't void my warranty then?

Why not taking it even further to something like 900/1200? Do you use a stock GPU fan?
