5850 vs 5870 - My Results & Opinions

wow great thread and a nice read. I am looking to upgrade my ageing 3870 as its getting a bit old in the tooth and i cant run bc2 at full detail at 1920x1200 smoothly.

Getting a 5850 looks roughly what i would like to spend on a graphics card at the time and the added overclocking potential is attractive.

Looking at the ocuk website Asus ATI Radeon HD 5850 DirectCU 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card.

This gfx card seems to be in stock. Just to confirm, this card has a bios that will allow me to overclock as well as tweak the voltages without reflashing?

Thanks in advance.

Also should i consider Asus ATI Radeon HD 5850 DirectCU TOP 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card ?

The MSI version of this card seems to be only avail on pre-order.

Review of the TOP below, for the sake of £20 I would go with the TOP.

The overclocks of our card are 850 MHz core (11% overclock) and 1255 MHz Memory (11% overclock).

I also tried using ASUS SmartDoctor to increase the GPU voltage. I reached 890 MHz at 1.15V, 940 at 1.20V, 970 at 1.25V, 965 at 1.30V and 970 at 1.35V which is the maximum in SmartDoctor. Please note that the voltages are listed as they are displayed in SmartDoctor - not actual measurements.

I believe some ppl are finding it hard to overclock the directcu version as high as the standard reference asus 5850 that I'm running in crossfire at 1000/4400 clocks on 1.3v. I just need 2 good aftermarket coolers now as the standard 1 gets a little loud for my liking. But temps have stayed below 70c so far.

thanks raven. will get the TOP version. So how much of an increase will i see going from a stock 3870 to overclocked TOP. ;).

Also im using a Q6600 @ 3.4ghz. i take it that this will be fast enough not bottleneck the card.

It's been debated on here before if the Q6600 at 3Ghz or above is good enough for a 5850/5870 and we came to the conclusion it will do the job just fine.

From a 3870 to a 5850 is a huge upgrade, I can safely say you will be blown a way at the performance increase. :)

hey guys, got my asus 5850 direct top. Played around with it for an evening and finally settled on an overclock of 900/1200. Very happy with this. From looking at the benchmarks this overclock puts it within roughly 0.5% of a stock 5870 which was my plan.

Bad Company 2 has never been so smooth. Very happy with my decision to go with a 5850 which this thread really decided :).

I'm a little dissapointed with my 5850 crossfire setup. 10.4 drivers helped quite abit but could still be better compared to a single 5850 performance. My 30" monitor is very power hungry!!
