5870 or 6870?

6 series is basically more efficient than the 5 series, with a couple of extra performance improvements.

The 5870 is faster than the 6870.

+1

This is the case.

It is confusing looking at the model designations between the 5 series and 6 series. (The 6 series upgrade for the 5870 is infact the 6970)

But from the 6 series and beyound the model designations will make sense.

So a 7870 would be the 7 series upgrade of the 6870.

7950 would be the upgrade for the 6950 etc etc etc.....

...until they change the numbering again, at least :)

Sukh, would you be kind enough to trust me a link to these cheap 5870's as I want a new one to crossfire with but cannot find them here nor anywhere. :)

Sorry I meant in the MM they go cheaper on average than a 6870.

OCUK is the cheapest place for GDX most of the time!

That is what I thought!

Anyway, there are drawbacks to crossfiring which is heat, of course. I would certainly look to get more fans in my case if I did. Luckuly my case has a dedicated GPU bracket that fiits an 80mm fan which would be pretty madatory imo. You do also hear of a lot of people having issues crossfiring 5 series cards but the few of my actualy friends that do, have not reported any issues.

Your other otpion is to flog the 5870 and crossfire 2 x 6870's which appears to be a sound solution for high end graphics on a budget. They run cooler and use less juice. Unless I can find a cheap XFX 5870 I shall probably stick with it untill the new 7 series cards are out. :)
