Into the relm of what to upgrade and was also wondering whether to go I5 route or top of the range card with my Q6600, the motherboard is a GA-965P-DS3 v1

Lemme get this straight, you're trying to choose between I5 or new gfx? Or is it just new gfx just not sure whether to upgrade the rest?

If the latter, why not try the gfx with the 775 quad and see if you're happy with the performance. Can you not clock it further?

I am looking at spending £600 on an i5 rig with a 5850 card or £250 - £300 ish on a top card.

When I look at upgrade the feedback I am getting is the move from Q6600 to I5 isn't worth it

I can try overclocking it a bit further, I think i can go to about 2.6/7

I guess it depends what you're using it for. If you try clock that quad a little more and get a top card, you'll have a better gaming machine than an I5 and 5850, but if you're encoding and using VMs etc, you're probably better off with a meatier processor.

EDIT: Another thought - if you go with the cheaper option you could sell your motherboard and grab a second hand P35 board (better for clocking 65nm CPUs) or a P45 and then maybe get more from the CPU if it's a G0 SLACR. Might want to look at changing it if it's the B3 though, cut your losses now.

Yes I do work with VMWare etc. too

Mmm food for thought

push that quad if i were you, 3.6ghz will be more then enough with a 5870, heck just get the 5850 and overclock that out.

as said, go i5/i7 later on if its still not enough.

If you can clock the Q6600, i5 would be a bit of a rubbish upgrade.

Heck, I can't even warrant an i7 upgrade, need something with substantial gains before I move from my trusty Q6600, what's even better about it is the fact it only cost £115 brand new and I've had it since June 2008; value for money or what! :D

Had the motherboard since August 2006 and the Q6600 since June 2007

Just looking into the 5870 & 5850

Cool.

Think the week point in my system is the GA-965P-DS3 board

The ASUS P5Q mobos are all great overclockers. Plenty of people with Yorkfields at 4GHz+ on them and Q6600s 3.6GHz+

Some bargains going in the MM for them too!

What voltages and FSB etc. should I go for in the BIOS settings? It's all currently on Auto at the moment.
